Updated iPod today - now doesn't work

Post by Spikey Horse »

I was prompted to update my iPod (one of the clickwheel 40GB 'music only' ones) software today which I did.

Now I can not transfer any mixes into it. I tried apple lossless which is what I normally use for roughmixes, then aiff, then mp3. I tried dragging from iTumes interface to iPod in iTunes and from Finder folders to iPod in iTunes.

I also reset the thing (hold menu+centre button)

Every time i get 'can't transfer to disk 'iPod' unknown error occured (-51)' message.

Anyone else with the same problem?

Any advice?

iTunes 6.0.1
iPod version 3.1.1
10.3.9

Spikey Horse, let me get this straight so you cannot transfer any iTunes library into your iPod library cause your iPod does not show up in iTunes just on your desktop? I would restart everything and when your computer is on then plug your iPod in and iTunes should start-up with your iPod in dock.

Go and check out iPod Issues? These five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues. Maybe that will help.

This is kind of like going to a foot doctor to fix an earache. Sure, he's an MD, but his focus is on the other end of the problem.

Same here. You will certainly get you questions more fully address at the Apple Discussions section.

Not quite Jon, iPod shows up in iTunes (and I can even play songs from it in iTunes) BUT I get that error message (-50) when I try and transfer anything to it from my iTunes library (all from within iTunes) or from any folder opened in Finder.... aiff, lossless, mp3 all the same.

Also I forgot to say I get same error when trying to transfer ANY file to the iPod when used as a HD. The icon opens fine from my desktop and I can open files already on it but just not add any more.

Thanks all for advice so far - I know the apple support route and all trouble shooting tips like the back of my hand (3 replacement iPods so far!!!). Already tried all possible fixes already and I will of course take this up with apple as usual - I was just hoping for some QUICK answers from anyone who might have experienced the same after updating recently.

... I was just starting to trust this iPod - after so many let downs - I really thought it was *different* from all the others, but no - they're all the same!

Good news though - I'm getting the iPod's own special icon on the desktop now - yippeee!

Hi Spikey,

From Apple's FM page:
paramErr -50
Invalid value passed in a parameter. Your application passed an invalid parameter for dialog options.

I'd say this is definitely Apple's fault. Try to downgrade to an earlier version.

Update!!

After much lethargy and general feelings self loathing induced by having spent £300 on this thing will never work (3 replacements and counting). I took it into the local Apple store (to avoid another round of waiting for couriers to collect/deliver) and after describing the problem the nice Apple man guessed the iPod model straight away without prompting (hmmm .....what did he know...?) and because I've had SO much iMisery with this product they gave me brand new **video** iPod straight away! :D

So that was nice and quite unexpected.

Now planning a quiet night in squinting at tiny video podcasts about all sorts of things I have absolutely no interest in whatsoever!

But seriously - will be great to be able to carry around a little portfolio of home made music videos from live and in the studio for when people ask what it is you do....

(Hopefully the novelty will have worn off before this one breaks  )
