Firewire Throughput

I need a remote recording medium . . . I was considering getting a Masterlink, but then I'm obviously limited to 2 tracks.
Now that the iMac G5s are down to $1200 or so, I am considering getting one of these as a remote "recorder" to use with my 828 mkII. The problem is it only has one internal drive. If I bought an external firewire drive (for the audio data), would recording through the FW bus and printing to a HD on the same bus create throughput problems. The most I would do would be 16 tracks at once. Most guys do this with a Powerbook, but it seems silly with the horsepower to price ratio with the iMac G5 (and though it's bigger than a laptop, its very portable.)
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Mike
