does anyone have any suggestions as to the optimal way to migrate my settings etc. from my retiring G4 to my new quad G5? is using the migration assistant OK? am using DP 4.61, Mach five, host of plugs and VIs, FC pro and soundtrack pro.

I migrated from G4 to G5 earlier this year and did it cold turkey (reinstall all 3rd party stuff) since I just don't trust migration assistants. I'd be interested in hearing your results if you decide to go that route though.
My guess is that Apple's migration assistant will help with Apple software, but won't help with 3rd party software (except perhaps to copy .plist files over to the new system verbatim). It's this latter part (verbatim copying of .plists) that sorta scares me since I don't have a clue about what platform dependencies (if any) exist in what .plist files.
But, for things like Mail, Safari, etc, it probably does a good job of transferring mailboxes, bookmarks, and settings.
