Anyone know a procedure for getting around lockouts on a drive?
My Tiger drive crashed and I can't mount it straighten out an error.
How do I get into root user?
Thanks

Boot while holding command-s, it will drop you into single-user mode (console).
From there you will want to run a FileSystemChecK before mounting the HD in read/write mode (it mounts read only by default). you can do this by typing:
fsck -fy
(this is the terminal equivalent of Apple Disk Utility's repair disk button)
then follow the instructions for mounting the HD is read/write mode. Beware you will only have the command line tools available at this point - so if you are unsure or even slightly wary...pay a professional to do this. You can do a lot of damage from single-user mode and it will not stop you (or even warn you) before or as it happens.
The question I always pose to people: what will the tech cost for a couple hours of work. Is your data worth at least that much? If so, call in the tech & put your mind at ease.

Thanks
Yes, I would hate to loose anything from this drive.
I'll take it in tomorrow for some help.
Cheers,
G
