New 2.3 VS. Rev B 2.0?

Post by solar »

Just wanted to get a consensus: I have been mulling over this about a week or so. I have a Rev B 2.0 ghz dual processor - This is what I currently have installed:

2.5gb Ram
40gb HD System OS
74gb Raptor for Samples
2 X 160gb HD Recording
(all SATA internal)

Hardware:
24i/o
2408 mk3
PCI 424

Software:
Kontakt 2
Guitar Rig 1 (soon to be GR2)
DP 4.61
FM7
Pro-53
Battery 2

This computer runs everything great except I wish it was a little more robust for Kontakt (Can run most everything until you get into surround or heavy convolution) And currently I us a Tascam Dm-d4000 digital mixer for most processing and mixing (DP4 is just for recording) but would like to start moving to an all digital/computer set up which would mean more burden on the computer.

The question:

Regarding the latest incarnation for the G5's and the uncertainty of MOTU regarding PCI Express, I was wondering if I should unload the 2.0 and get a 2.3 Dual processor (not dual core) and keep it for the next 2 yrs or so until the whole Mac/Intel deal sorts itself out. I don't really want to get a liquid cooled (just not sure of it for the long haul). The dilemma is I will take a slight hit selling the 2.0 and getting a 2.3 around $700 I figure - That $700 could possibly go toward more ram a couple more hard drives and maybe some more software synths (which I don't really need javascript:emoticon(':D')) If I kept the 2.0.

Does anyone have any experience using both computers? I've tried looking around for benchmark tests and some say that the 2.3 is almost as fast as the 2.5 and slightly slower than the new 2.3 dual core but most bench marks are using photoshop and the sorts, nothing out there regarding audio testing especially soft synths and virtual instruments.

Just looking for some opinions and hopefully real world users. Hopefully someone will shed some light or know something that I overlooked or didn't consider.

Thanks
