Help with Stuck notes in Digital Performer 3.11

Post by ClydeXP »

HI,

I'm new here and hope this question won't seem dumb.

I have DP 3.11 and ever since I got it I have had intermittent problems with sticking notes.

DP 3.11 is running on a Mac G3 (OS 9.1) through a USB FastLane Free MIDI interface to a Roland XV-5080 (128 note polyphony capable). It's a simple one to one connection, no other hardware involved.

There are times when I get terrible stuck notes, and there is no consistency about it. I went to the MOTU site and followed recommendations there but they haven't had any effect.

Sometimes, if I move the wiper in the graphic editor, with audio sample turned on, it makes the Roland play the note and then the note sticks. It will do this even when all channels but one are muted. I can't figure it out.

Sometimes, it will play a multi channel piece through with no sticking notes, but other times there are sticking notes and only the All Notes Off (Panic) command shuts them off.

I also notice that if I have patch changes in a MIDI track, they work when the song is played, but if I scrub through, they go crazy.

I am trying to figure out where the problem is coming from, not blaming DP, just looking for a solution.

I have read that:

The MIDI cables may be no good and I should buy new ones, such as what Monster cables makes with their special shielding and so on. OR that there is a buffer overload problem somewhere, OR that the note OFF events are not getting through to the Roland... and so on.

Anyone had a similar experience and found a simple solution?

Thanks!

You're struggling with software from another millennium. Do yourself a favour and give OS9 a decent burial.

Get yourself a computer with some grunt, OSX Tiger, and the latest version of DP, and you won't believe the difference.

Good luck.

Stuck notes in DP 3.11 was (from what I remember of the problem)
somewhat par for the course.
I never ran into it myself, but you might want to try trashing freemidi
prefs and start a new setup from scratch.

I thought DP 3 was from this millenium...

Man, I guess I'll have to just trash my GT500 because it's behind the times.... :D :D

Dang! You're right Billy. I guess it just seems that long ago :)
But the advice is good. I can't imagine going back to OS9.

Cheers,

Yeah, I hear ya, neither can I; but at the same time it's nice to have older stuff that works and retains usefulness and functionality. Gets harder everyday with computers. I'm still resisting Tiger, however, because Panther's running just fine; sometimes constant upgrade paths get tiresome.
