Quick help needed with Monitoring/headphone mixes

Post by csharp35 »

I have a question...I looked in the manual and didnt find the answer

I was tracking a session on saturday with a live band. The band consisted of a drummer, 2 keyboard players and a bass player. They were all recording at the same time. However, I ran into a problem because each one could not hear there part over the drummer. If I turned down the drummer's input...that would change the volume of the music being recorded. Here's my question...How can I turn up the volume in the headphone/control room monitor mix without changing the volume being recorded into DP? Should I be using different headphone mixes and if so...how should I set that up? Right now i'm only using analog 1-2 outputs. Here's my equipment and setup.

G5 2.0 with DP4.6
Motu 2408 mkIII
mackie big knob
mackie control universal

Drums coming through Motu via lightpipe
keyboards coming through Motu via lightpipe
bass coming through Motu on analog 1 via Avalon 737

I'm using a behringer headphone amp in the studio room with the drummer...the audio is being input into the headphone amp from the return on the snake
the other musicians are using a headphone amp in the control room...with the output coming out of the mackie big knob.

I hope this is clear...let me know if you need more details. I'll be doing another session on wednesday...so if you can get back to me before then...it would be greatly appreciated.

Use the other analog outs patched into the direct ins to the specific headphone mix.

Ex. I have a Behringer 8 Ch headphone amp, I use an insert snake to send 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 to headphone mix 6, 7 and 8 respectively.

This allows me to send a sep mix to the drummer, keyboards, and Bass and let the gtr polayer here what I am monitoring off outs 1/2

Cue Mix is your best friend. Basically the drummer justs asks for Bass/Keys/CLick and Gtr in his Mix, cuz he can hear his drums.

Bass asks for Bass, Kick Snare Hat/ Keys and Gtr

Keys asks for Keys, Bass, Kick,Snare, Hat and Gtr
and Gtr player gets my mix with his gtr on top.

No one Complains and life is good :)

You need to use some one or more of the other outputs on your 2408. Before we had our PCI-424 and CueMix, we used sends on the tracks to send the signals out via one of the other outputs on our 2408. For tracking, you'd need to set up Aux channels receiving the inputs from the players and route them out via Analog 3+4 or 5+6 or whatever, just like on an analog mixer. You can then set up a mix using those aux's. For overdubbing, you'd use the sends to send out a mix for them to play to.

That way you can send them a mix that is independent of your monitoring levels. Once the tracks are recorded, however, you need to set your sends to pre-fader so if you make adjustments in your listening, it doesn't affect the headphones.

Or get a PCI-424 and CueMix. It's golden.
