In Track view, what does the 'enable' column mean?

Post by wwzeitler »

Tracks seem to play fine without the 'enable' button activated. What does this do?

(P.S. I try google first before asking here. The 1000+ page manual is still a little daunting!)

Thanks!

Enable is an important feature if you work with templates, especially large templates. Unlike Play/Mute, which is a real-time, automatable parameter, Enable/Disable turns on/off the track and all resources, saving RAM and CPU horsepower. Disabling and reenabling a track takes a moment as resources are turned off and on.

I have a pretty substantial template with lots of VIs, many of which will go unused in any given project. By keeping tracks in the Disabled state, DP is not bogged down, but they are ready to go with a click of the Enable button with routing/presets and plugins just the way I like them.

Great. Like "archiving" in Cubase.

I have multiple Vienna Ensemble Pro (VEP) clients in my project, all connected to VEP on a second beefy VST instrument server.

At the moment I have one VEP client with 'enable' on, for all of the rest it's turned off. It's also turned on for my one reverb aux bus. So only two enables are 'on', the rest are 'off'. Yet, all the VEP instances are working. I also don't seem to be able to toggle any of them (whether on or off).

It's not blocking me, but I'm trying to understand DP.

The behavior I described pertains to tracks/VIs hosted in DP itself. I don't use VEP, so how DP interacts with it is outside of my scope of knowledge. I'm sure you'll figure it out!

Not sure what you're seeing. If you disable a VEP Instrument track, all the bundles are no longer available and should appear italicized for all routings to/from tracks associated with that instrument track. This applies to multiple instances in the VEP server each assigned to a different VEP Instrument track in your project. As each one is disabled it's bundles (I/O) would become unavailable. I don't see how disabled instrument tracks would continue to play through if that's what you're saying. Maybe check with the Vienna Community.
