David @ MixBusTV posts video about switching to Mac

Post by James Steele »

I’ve seen a number of this guy’s videos on YouTube. He does reviews also professional mixer etc. and he was going through hell recently building his new windows machine for his studio. Had all kinds of problems with backward compatibility with thunderbolt etc.

Anyway he posted a new video about how he has changed to a Mac and how much better the experience is.

Don't know what's up at Intel, but they're self sabotaging these days. The issues with the i9 are pretty well known (heat and stability). That along with their TB4 compatibility issues on the PC has pushed a lot of folks to Mac. I needed a new laptop and went back to Mac with a 2023 MB Air fully loaded just on the TB issue. Anyone doing PC builds today would be best served with an i7 or Xeon as long as there are no TB 1/2 requirements.

ARM PCs are now on the market. There will be more.

I don’t pay attention to this so I don’t know if these machines support USB 4. If so, then Thunderbolt 1–4 and backwards compatibility to USB 2 should be included — like Apple Silicon.

The one backwards compatibility issue will be regular Windows. So far no Rosetta like layer for the Windows Arm build.

Here is another “switcher” singing the praises of the new Apple Silicon Macs. This guy is actually a pretty well-known Cubase guru on YouTube.

Since Microsoft is the company pushing this, that is surprising. Oh wait, we’re talking about Microsoft. Never mind…

I mean we're on Rosetta 2 even, they've have almost 20 years to steal ideas from Apple in their typical wait until Apple does it then claim to innovate in that area years later fashion, I don't know what's wrong with them here? :koolaid:

I'd hazard a guess that Microsoft is even less concerned with the niche pro audio market than Apple is. Actually, I think Apple understands that one of it's core constituencies are "creatives" and now understands they need to keep us happy. I don't know what kind of headway they've made in the business world, but it used to frustrate me so much the amount of time and effort Apple spent trying to make inroads into the corporate world. I've heard stories from people who work in large companies that the IT people are very Windows-centric and don't want to deal with workers who want to use Macs in the office. I could be wrong.

I can confirm that. Microsoft has the upper hand because they learned from IBM that users don’t buy computers and software at large companies. So they market to the systems people. The basic value proposition is that you don’t want employees using Macs because they can do whatever they want with them. If you buy windows you get an entire layer of control over what they can do. There is a very legitimate reason for a large company to go that way if you think about it. Basic security for a start.

The irony in my situations is that all the advertising people used Macs, and so did most of the tech support people (because they could do anything, so they actually had a need for it).
