Tiger vs. Panther for 4.6?
Now that Tiger's been around for such a long time, what's the consensus on which operating system is a better environment for running 4.6?
I'm days from making the jump to tiger. What's the best plan of attack? I'm skeptical about the direct upgrade and i'm fearful of a new install and a weeks worth of plug installs/auths.

Beubbo 10.3.9 worked just fine for me . My main concern was the UAD-1 update. After that it was an ez jump to 10.4.2. Everything just feels a bit more snappy to me but maybe that is just in my head. Besides you can find better deals on the 10.4.1 software in the stores now.beubbo wrote:could you elaborate a little bit ?jon wrote:Smashprod 10.4.2 is better then 10.3.9 regarding 4.6
have you experienced some probs on 10.3.9 that have disappeared "by themselves" when upgrading to Tiger ?
or is it just related to performance gain ?
thanks very much in advance

no problems with 10.4.2
I made the jump from 10.2.6 up to 10.4.2 (bypassed Tiger completely!)and haven't had any problems at all. (MMD Dual Processor 867 G4)
Even with Panther, just get rid of stuff you don't need for music or for browsing the internet; do things like disable the Dashpot thing-ma-jigs and don't have any startup programs upon bootup. Get rid of languages you don't need, printer drivers, useless modem stuff, etc. etc. I got rid of any OS 9 remnants as well
Panther is great with DP 4.6. .....great stuff!

What is the best way to get from panther to Tiger?
I'm in 4.6 now but would like to be up and running quickly.
Is the upgrade without fresh install too risky? I did it on my laptop and it seemed fine but i don't have the plugs or other stuff to worry about.

I use Panther for music and Tiger for everything else (iMovie, DVD burning, for instance). I keep each OS on a separate partition and, since all of my authorization have to be on the boot partition that I'm using for music, I made the decision early on to stay in Panther even though I bought a G5 that shipped with Tiger.
I've had no regrets. The "look and feel" of my operating system is miles away from what I consider important while I'm trying to run a studio out of my computer. I know of no reason to use Tiger over Panther in a DP studio.
*** My initial reason for going with Panther was that I had to run Waves v.4 because v.5 conflicts with Unity, and v.4 is Panther-only. Since then, I've retired Unity (when I got Kontakt, which imports Unity banks! Usually!) and I've very down on Waves now anyway since there's a major known bug with parameters only "snapping back" when you touch something in the interface. I can do without Waves because I'm way into VintageWarmer, MW EQ, and my Powercore TC plugs. RenComp and RenVox are the hardest to replace... anyone know a good software compressor?

This is what I did and I was pretty much up and running within 2 hours.
I first installed Tiger on an extra partition, updated, etc. I then used the Mac's Setup Assistant and transferred all my settings, email, bookmarks, other apps, etc all at once. I then uninstalled DP because it didn't work and reinstalled (it then worked). The only plugs that needed to be authorized were my Native Instrument stuff. I was actually pretty shocked actually that it worked at all let alone had me using Tiger as soon as I did. I did it more out of boredom. This was back in July FYI and I've been using it ever since.
The key is to do it on the spare partition so that if things don't work out right away there's zero down time.
