Acasis NVM drive enclosure with fan (pics)

Post by James Steele »

I got this this Acasis NVMe drive enclosure with fan today. Below are pics of it with the Samsung 990 Pro NVMe installed and you can see it compared to the fanless drive enclosre I bought previously. I like that it's a bit wider and more stable sitting vertically. Also there's a tiny button on the case that lets you turn the fan on or off. It's so quiet I think I'll just keep it running... else why pay more for one with a fan, right?

Also the transfer speeds are good. It's connected to my OWC Thunderbolt Dock.

This however didn't solve my problem with my NVMe drive itself. I mentioned before it had been a little flaky. Steinberg Library Manager wouldn't let me move a library to it. It said the operation failed. Also I tried to run Disk First Aid and Disk Utility couldn't unmount the disk and gave an error. Just now, however, I tried running Disk First Aid and it worked. Wondering if maybe something else was accessing the drive at the time. (Maybe a DP project was open and a VI was using a sample library?). Either way... the case is nice.

Thanks... I was sort of willy-nilly thinking of ordering another 4TB Samsung and put it in the old enclosure so I could copy this one over, reformat it and copy it back. Ugh... I forgot 4TB NVMe drives are that expensive... never mind. I paid $345 for the 4TB Samsung on 10/10/23. It's currently $329 with a $20 coupon off, so $319. Yes... less... but they haven't come down much in price since then. Like I said... I guess I'll pass for now!

This Crucial P3 is $238. The speeds are only good in PCI4 slots in Windows machines but NVMe 4 x4 is fully backward compatible with NVMe 3 x4.

Good to know! Thanks, Mike! I think the reason I paid more for the Samsung was, at the time, the manufacturer of the first case I bought (it's no longer available) had a chart on the Amazon page for their drive that said that Crucial drives weren't recommended. So I didn't want to chance it. $238 is a lot easier to swallow and perhaps this case is fine with it. Could buy on Amazon and easily return if it doesn't work out. I'm tempted. I love these little NVMe drives! In fact it would be awesome to use for Time Machine instead of spinners... I imagine if I *had* restore it would be sooooo much faster. (Just remembered... I'd need 8TB... those are probably pretty pricey!)

Also... I have a Time Machine question for you. If I were to just decide to reformat my Samples Drive volume and it's backed up by Time Machine, would I be able to just... immediately after reformatting it... go into time machine and fine the volume and just copy the contents back to the drive?

Yes! I learned this when configuring my Studio and decommissioning my iMac Pro.

You will see it as one of your restore volumes in TM. Since it's external, you won't be able to do a 20 second APFS Snapshot restore (I don't think).

As to your other question, I'm using pairs of 8TB 2.5" SSDs in WD boxes with built-in RAID 0 over Ethernet. Enjoying the silence.

Unfortunately, though fine for my Mac, my network is too large for the above. There are 4-bay solutions that can rebuild RAID volumes in case one goes down but I have a client coming over and will need to post thar later.

Does that mean I should start up my Mac from the Restore partition and then choose Time Machine and choose that volume and restore? That's better than just booting normally and choosing Browse Time Machine Backups and backing up to the day before and then dragging to reformatted volume?

Yes.

I'll see if I can get a screen shot.

Hey thanks, Mike. I think when I'm ready to try that, just to ease my mind, I'll Finder copy everything to spare drive, just so the first time I try it I'm not too nervous. LOL
