Upgrading G4 (FW800) Single 1GHZ / Help

Post by Mzartop6 »

I'm currently looking at upgrading my Mac to a dual processor.
(VST instruments are getting the best of me! ) I own a Powermac G4 (FW800 Mirror Drive Doors) / Single 1GHZ / 133MHZ.

I have located the compatable Apple OEM Dual 1ghz/133MHZ processor and a heat sink. ( I'll get a killer deal if I buy it! )

The questions I have are:

Does the firmware need to be updated for the new daughter card or is it plug and play?

What about the 120mm cooling fan? The one installed (Delta) does not move alot of air so I cant imagine it will cool two processors. Do you repace it or does the firmware up the speed? Or what? (This is confusing since I can't get a straight answer from other user forums.)

If anybody has done this upgrade let me know how it went. I would also be greatful to anyone with a G4 FW800 Dual 1ghz system that could take a peek under the hood and let me know what the part number is on the 120mm cooling fan.

Thanks!

Just very recently ( two month ago ) I purchased a used G4 dual 1 GHz 1 GB RAM. This G4 was upgraded from a single to a dual before I bought it. However due to heat issues it gave me that black curtain of death we installed several internal fans to cool down the heat sink and one of those PC fans that blow the internal heat out. Still no go. The black curtain of death. In this G4 the video card was located infront of the heat sink and so that is not good.

One day I was soo mad I took the machine back and just left it there for them to do what ever they wanted.

Therefore my advice to you is forget about doing a mother board upgrade and fan upgrade unless the shop doing that for you gives you a decent warranty on their work/service.

The shop/techguys I deal with provide a one year warranty on the Mac's they upgrade.

Inciently I ended up purchasing from the same guys a G4 dual 1.25 GHz with 2 GB RAM. It's been running ( TIGER and PANTHER on two separate drives ) for about a month without a single black curtain or freeze.

I have the same computer (single 1 Ghz, FW 800 asf.).
Has anybody upgraded one of those for use with Digital Performer?
What are your recommendations/experiences?

Thanks.

I‘ve just done TWO upgrades on my QS 2001 867. The first was a Sonnet
1Giga single, excellent results with DP. The second a Sonnet 1.4Giga single.
Again excellent and stable.
