Logic Sessions to DP 4.6 Sessions.

Post by Fibes »

I 've been hired to mix and finish an album that was started in Logic (which i don't own) and would like to load up the tempo maps and file placement. I would rather not have to ask for 'from zero" files since there are so many at this point.

Is there a way I can get this stuff into DP without my new client having to pay money for the other studio to "prep" for me?

Thanks,

Crossing fingers...

I own both and I don't think there's an easy way to go. They could save as an OMF file and export the MIDI file. That would take minimal time assuming they don't need to print the MIDI tracks to audio. If the gig pays well enough you could cross grade to Logic and look at it as an opportunity (or excuse) to own both. Then, you charge the money to export the stuff instead of the other studio. It may not pay for itself in the first gig but it'll prep you for the next time. I have Logic and PT for that reason alone and they've both paid for themselves.

I found somewhere but can't remember where instructions of creating a macro in logic and/or cubase to dump all the tracks as separate wavs. These are then very easy and quick to import into any other app. You lose all the automation etc but unless its highly electronic stuff that shouldn't matter.

Thanks, I don't need automation or effects just for the files to line up (without merging) and the tempo maps to work.

If DP supported BWav we'd be closer.

OMF is probably the quickest, as outlined above. Make sure that during the export the same bit depth is maintained. You are not going to appreciate if the files get truncated from 24 to 16 bit....

If not going the OMF route:

There are several export/bounce options in logic. One problem I had to face is that sometimes the files delivered to me would not contain time stamps. I usually recommend that files be consolidated/merged from start to end. This way placement is not an issue at all. If there are sections that need to be split, I take care of that.

Cheers

What about this AAF or whatever?

OMF -> no automation

AAF -> automation is included

On tracks where there's no auto you'll have to set levels/pans by yourself.
Tempo track: I see no other solution than the MIDI file...

In addition, different apps support different options and exceptions apply. The DP 4.6 update notes provide information on this.

You're talking about the new kings of proprietary control over users allowing exporting? Damn!

I'm surprised Logic allows what it does. Don't let Steve Jobs know. He'll probably lock that down along with the Logic/GB plugs. iPod, Logic, AU... it is getting really frustrating. I can't wait for DP Linux.

Makes me long for the "open" days of Microsoft.
