Upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.6 - Comaptability Questions
I'm in the middle of a recording project. I've ran into some extra money and want to do some upgrades. I'm still running OS 10.2.8. What kind of problems would I run into if I upgraded to to tiger or panther and went from DP 4.1.2 to 4.6? Would I be able to use the material recorded in 4.1.2 with the beneifts 4.6? Or is this a really bad idea?
With all the varibles that can arise in one's studio with plugins/ CPU version & model/hardware/MAS vs. DAE etc, etc - IMHO I think it's a really BAD idea to do an upgrade in the middle of a project.
Even If you love the new versions it will always take a couple of days - assuming the upgrade goes really smoothly in the first place - to get wired to any of the changes in the software.
If it were me - I'd wait.
Good luck with your project and congrats on the extra cash!

deface7,
I just recently did that exact upgrade. I had a spare partition on a hard drive, so I did a clean install of Tiger and DP 4.6 from scratch. That left my 10.2.8 partition with DP 4.12 intact, so I had no risk.
Tiger was very noticably faster on my setup and I have had no issues with DP 4.6 yet. I am really enjoying the new features in DP. Now I don't need to upgrade my Autotune. I had been putting that off becuase it was sort of pricey. When I need to tune a vocal, I previously used OS 9.2 and DP 3.11. DP 4.8 is finally enough of an incentive that I may never use my OS 9 setup again.
Also, you are the only other DP user in Louisville that I have heard of. I am not alone, anymore.
DP4.6, Dual 1Ghz MDD, MTP/av, 2408 mk II w/424 card, Tiger, etc.

gseibert,
were you able to open and run projects created with 4.1 and use the in 4.6?
do you run a studio localy? Are you in any local bands? I'm playing and recording for a band called Assisting Sorrow. Maybe you've heard of us?
I'm leaning on just buynig some new plug-in's and just finishing the project... we've spent ALOT of time on it so far and have only recorded drums and bass. any suggestions on plug-in's? I'm pretty set on getting the Elemental Audio Max bundle... is there anything else that I could get to round those plugs out? All I have are stock plug ins and some free bee's like blockfish (which is nice)

Deface,
I had no problems opening a 4.1 project in 4.6. All the plug-ins that I had set up for 4.1, I have been able to open in 4.6.
I have a small home studio, I am treasurer for LMIA (Louisville Musci Industry Alliance), if you have heard of that organization.

We know a lot of bands but I have missed yours for some reason. I will need to check you out, though. Do you have a Myspace?
I use the blockfish stuff, also no problems, and i have the
elemental free metering plug. That's a very nice plug for free.
I don't own it, but when i get a free $500, my next purchase is Altiverb. Takes your recordings up a level for sure.
I am good friends with Jeff at Head First studios. When I need more juice for a mix, i take it down there to finish, they have a PT HD Accell setup with every plug-in you can think of. Great place to figure out what sounds good and what is crap. Might be worth booking an hour with them just to audition plugs. They are going to install DP on their Mac soon, I believe, so you could even just take a project there without any conversion hassles.
Send me a PM if you want.

Sure, your Mac can boot from an external drive. I have a friend that got a new 2.7 Ghz. He used Carbon Copy to copy his Powerbook to an external Firewire drive, plugged it into his new 2.7, changed his startup disk, and booted right up into OS 10.3.9, even with OSX 10.4 on the internal drivejonotronic wrote:Now here's a thing, if you upgrade your mac is it possible to boot from an external drive? If I buy a new one it'll run tiger, and I've plenty of stuff running fine in panther that I'm quite happy with.
