Can I run 2 powered USB/FW hubs?

Post by midiw »

I have used up the usb plug-ins on my powered USB hub.

In addition I have used up the 2 firewire plugs on my G4.

I am considering purchasing another powered hub. The one I saw has both usb and firewire plug-in ability.

Can I run/use both powered hubs?

If the extra hubs have their own powersupplys - you should within the limits
of the protocols themselves - be able to daisychain any number of hubs.

Beware that not all firewire soundcards or other soundry external
soundmaking gear seem to like this.

Some gadgets seem to need to be plugged directly into the usb-port or
firewire-port on your computer.

PCI cards are much better than hubs. You can add many hubs, which is a good way to extend the reach of USB since you can't go very far without repeating the signal (hub). Though, hubs share one road into the computer. How many cars can you cram onto a two way street before there are issues. Adding a PCI card is like adding another street. This goes for FireWire too.

Adding PCI cards may affect sleep but if you don't get any sleep working long hours, why should your computer? :D
