Feature "ReQuest-ion:" option to create new takes?

Post by otalgia-2000 »

Greetings

At (way-long) last, I've recently had success adjusting tempos using ADJUST SOUNDBITE TO SEQUENCE TEMPO.

Now that I'm good and ready to start enjoying all that power and flexibility, it occurs to me that a useful feature request could be suggested as regards those processes which create new soundbites programmatically: the option to create the new soundbites on a new take in their tracks (or to keep them in the same take) when you prepare to hit APPLY.

It then also occurred to me that, being a newcomer to the correct implementation of time stretching, tempo adjustment, quantization, etc., there could well be some very obvious reason why the new soundbites always replace those in the current take. I guess one reason would be "Because most often, the new audio is what you're going to want to use anyway so why bother creating a take you'll never likely use."

If that, or some other reason, is the case I'd be very interested to expand my familiarity with the process.

Please note that I'm still using DP9 -- maybe such is already the case in 10.

My personal practice is to duplicate the take before I do major editing, time stretching, pitch correction, or other complicated processes. DP offering to do it for me would necessitate a reply, which would not save much time over choosing "duplicate take" before starting. If I was going through a track and time compressing or expanding a soundbite here or there, I wouldn't want it to ask me every time... That's just me.

In any case, if you're using DP9, I hope it's v.9.5 with the ZTX features. I'm completely blown away by the quality of pitch and time operations in DP 9.5 and DP10.

If you're a newcomer, you might not be aware that you can rename takes, either via the takes pop-down or by option-clicking the take number field. It doesn't have to be simply a number. My take naming structure might be... say take 7 is the best take:
7* (asterisk means keeper)
7 edited
7 edit & pitch

That way, it's easy to refer back to the original take, in case I went too far... ;-)

Thank you, Frank

I see what you're getting at and it makes sense. I rather had in mind streamlining the operation when it's being applied to several tracks at once. But one of the things I believe I learned (after many unsuccssesful attempts) was, don't do it that way -- perform the ADJUST SOUNDBITE action on only one track at a time so as to focus upon the optimal setting for the beats mapped to each one. Maybe when i get real good, I can alter multiple tracks at once.

If I may extend this into a how-to question:

i'm still not sure which scenarios suggest using ADJUST SOUNDBITE TO SEQUENCE TEMPO and which would be better with QUANTIZE BEATS WITHIN SOUNDBITES. I do know that I had no luck at all with the latter -- it returned very artifact-y results time and time again, I am sure owing to some fault of my own. But again perhaps applying the operation to several tracks at once (and to live drums, at that -- I know, I know, just asking for trouble) was part of my problem there. Are there any guidelines (albeit even notional ones) making around a choice between the two?

In answer to your question, yes -- I am using DP 9.52; hoping to bump up to 10 in the near-ish future.

Thank you again for taking the time to replay. All the best,
