Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?

Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Hi there I recently got a New Mac Mini and installed Mojave on it. In terms of updates, anything past the original installer brings about a sleep/restart bug; and all subsequent updates including the recent 005 security and supplemental update does not resolve it. So for the second time I reinstalled the Original without erasing my disk and all those bugs seem to be gone!
I was curious if anyone here has dealt with it. Since the original Mojave installer doesn't bring this about, and since this new setup is light years ahead of my El Capitan Imac, unless I am missing something here, I just do not see my Computer and computer-life as a need for the so-called extra security these updates are affording. And for that matter if CC info and e-comerce is the main concern I can just shop on my imac? Any thoughts anyone... And I doubt these updates do anything to improve DP functionality -- which unfortunately and embarrassingly I haven't explored much yet.
Thanks for your time...

Re: Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Can you explain what the "sleep/restart" bug is? If you mean you have to restart the Mac to get out of sleep, that's a long time bug. The only solution is DO NOT SLEEP YOUR MAC. If it's something else, let us know.

Re: Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Sorry but no, it's not a bug nor is it caused by the T2 chip (despite everyone knowing it is). If getting a crash report, BridgeOS is a symptom — but I first encountered it on my 2010 iMac where BridgeOS doesn't exist. There are many threads on MacRumors, some blame High Sierra, others blame Mojave while others blame Catalina and flame anyone sensible enough to tell them the truth:anything past the original installer brings about a sleep/restart bug; and all subsequent updates including the recent 005 security and supplemental update does not resolve it
There is something causing this. It needs to be found and removed. The best way is to get a support call from Apple — they'll send it to Engineering if they must. When found, they'll walk you through removal. I've gone through this a few times on a number of my Clients' Macs. A crash report makes it easy for them but they will install a tracing tool they can monitor in real time to find the culprit. Schedule the phone call on the Support site. It's free.
The three files causing it on my machine with the 2020-002 security update were FileAccessControl.kext (Soundflower pre OS 10.11), NIUSBGuitarRigMobile.kext (NIGuitarRig2) and PACESupportFamily.kext (OS 10.6/7 compatibility).
Removing all three made the crashing go away but did not fix the Restart issue ((many symptoms with the same cause). You may have to reset launch services to default. It's a good idea to try it anyway — won't fix the underlying cause but may make the symptoms go away.
Reset Launch Services
1. Open Terminal and run these commands (copy & paste), then <return>. Enter your Admin password when requested.:
2. sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network
3. killall Dock
4. sudo mdutil -E /
5. Restart your Mac
Last March, it took a few weeks of scheduled calls to get this nailed. Now it takes my clients two — one to report and find the problem and the second to receive the report & remove the offending files. I know to walk them through resetting Launch Services.

Re: Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Hey thanks for mentioning it -- with so many people talking about it and not one reference to a Mac tech support fix I assumed it wasn't something that an expert could fix. Well on a rainy day maybe I will install the updates again and then call Apple? But are you sure they are not just going to tell (try to convince me) me to Upgrade to Catalina?

Re: Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Pardon my ambiguity. Attention MLC....
IN my case the bug manifests (did, fixed now going back to the Mojave original (no updates!)) as a
sleep... then restart loop that never seems to end unless I disable the sleep function in System Preferences. The idea of a new computer that quite Frankly doesn't work right from the Get-go is very annoying! And the bug is initiated starting with any it seems of the updates including the most recent for Mojave. And it seems some in Catalina are having related issues!

I agree, it's stupid that this bug remains, but it does and the only solution is to not sleep the machine. Just one of those things...

Re: Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Not a bug. There is a Deep Sleep issue on AHCI Macs where the SSD has been replaced by an NVMe 3 x4 blade. A simple Terminal command fixes that — still not a bug. The only AHCI based Mac made after 2014 is the Mac Pro 6.1.I agree, it's stupid that this bug remains, but it does and the only solution is to not sleep the machine. Just one of those things..
It happened to me on my 2010 iMac over High Sierra with the March 2019 security update — never tried to find the problem since resetting launch services fixed me up.plum wrote:Hey thanks for mentioning it -- with so many people talking about it and not one reference to a Mac tech support fix I assumed it wasn't something that an expert could fix. Replaced that with my iMac Pro, migrated my 2010 over. The March 2020-002 security update to 10.14.5 produced crash reports. Apple offered to exchange my machine under AppleCare but lockdown had just started and the trouble began with the security update so I said, "No — let's find and fix this!" and the journey began.
Removing the problem kexts stopped the crash reports but didn't fix the restart issue. I remembered Resetting Launch Services — Apple hadn't thought of that one. They learned as much as I during that process.
OS Support calls are free for three years. High Sierra runs out in a few weeks. Go to Support and navigate to schedule a call. They will call you normally within 10 minutes of the request. They'll want to see your screen and install the tracer if needed. If it needs to go to Engineering, the tech will schedule a follow up call, normally the same time the following week.
OS 10.14.4 fixed a number of issues surrounding USB interfaces (MOTU was one of the few not affected, btw) so I wouldn't run anything earlier. I and many others are running 10.14.6 with the latest security patch and updaters without issue.
If you don't have your Mini set to Prevent Computer from sleeping automatically…, Wake for network access and Enable Power Nap under System Preferences/Energy, do so and see if it makes a difference. A Mini uses less electricity than a night light when the display is off.

Re: Sleep/Restart Mojave bug?
Anyway my Mac runs great with the "original" Mojave installer!
Please tell me do I need to do anything else for now to have my dream DP machine?
I could probably download Safari separately...
I'm just for the meantime do I need these security updates...
IS someone going to cyber rob me or supplant a virus that makes my Mini explode.
