Issues getting MOTU 896 to work on windows 10 PC

Post by Markus Unicorn »

Hi All,

I have done a fairly extensive search, and although there are similar threads, unfortunately I still haven't found the a solution.

I recently brought a second hand MOTU 896

The guy I brought it from assured me the drivers a compatible with Windows 10, ad I downloaded the drivers from the MOTU website, and they seemed to install fine.

I have installed the MOTU Universal Audio Installer 4.0.5.9198
Which seemed to install with no issues,

But when I try to open I get the following error messages:

MOTU PCI audio console: internal audiowire driver logic error (15)

"MOTU audio ASIO" comes up in the VST Audio System tab in device setup in Cubase 5

But when I select it with the card connected my PC freezes.

My system specs are below:

Windows 10 pro
Processor :AMD RYZEN 5 2400G with Raedon Graphics card 3.60 GHz
RAM : 16.0GB
System type: 64 bit operating system x64 based processor

The MOTU device is also showing in the devices menu.

Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

"What is the firmware version when it boots up?"

Hi,

I am trying to find out, by right clicking on the MOTU in devices menu right? - but when I plug it in now (have to for it to show in devices) it freezes, so I cant get to the point where I can see the firmware version unfortunately at this moment in time.

Hopefully I am doing the right process to find out the firmware.

Thanks

Are you using the legacy firewire driver for windows? It might help. Check this:

Thankyou for your reply, I tried installing the legacy drivers as you suggested, but unfortunately when I reconnect the firewire cable the PC shuts down, within about 30 seconds.

I also updated the BOIS, which seems to have made no difference.

The firmware should display on the screen as the unit boots up.

you're not confusing my 896 with the 896 mk3 by any chance?

(as in there is no screen on my 896)

the software isn't actually booting up so I assume you are not taking about that.

It would be great to get a definitive answer either way weather the ORIGINAL 896 will work with windows 10 either way, at the moment Its looking unlikely...

But if I know 100% this was the case at least I can move on.

Things I have tried.

Installing all the versions of he audio drivers for windows from MOTU website
Updatating BIOS
Installing Legace Firewire drivers

I have read about using Firewire cards with T.I. chipset in other threads, but I really don't want to throw anymore cash at this unless there is a very good chance of it working.

Raised a ticket with MOTU, but I don't know how likely it is they will respond.

Thanks.

Oh yea, no boot screen on the first version. The firmware n al should be 1.02. It may display on the control panel.

If your FW card is not using the TI chipset, there’s little chance of it working over WIN 10.

Other than that, you’re waiting on MOTU support, I suppose. They recently got back to me on my 22 year old Micro Express but it was not right away.

I am using a firewirecard atm with windows 10 with my mackie oynx. unless the T.I chipset is a exclusively MOTU / Windows 10 thing, maybe my card has a T.I. chipset already. will look into.

Well that's re-assuring maybe there is hope yet. cheers Mike.

So.. bit of an update, I felt like some progress has been made, but still no sound unfortunately: I thought I would have one last try here.

Firstly I purchased a new firewire card, with TI chipset.

Now I have installed this, the computer seems to recognize the device, and it is showing in the windows sound menu.

The problem seems to be no audio coming from the unit itself. the windows volume mixer showing audio, but there is no indication of audio showing on the units meters at all.

I have tried various approaches , initially I plugged my active monitors into the main out - no joy, also patching from analogue outs into desk to see if any audio was flowing from these, (obviously re-assigned the output settings in windows) with no joy.

I'm still experiencing various success with managing to open the "MOTU audio console" depending on the version of driver I download.

Any thoughts any1? or am I flogging a dead unicorn?

Cheers

Sounds like you got it properly recognized and won the battle. If you change settings in the motu audio console do you see them reflected in the 896's status LED's? Is your DAW SW using audio motu's ASIO driver? Does it see th 896's ins and outs?
