Muting movies pernamently

Post by grouse »

This might be a quirk of DP7 but it keeps catching me out.
The project doesn't remember the mute status of the movie I've imported into a DP project.

I use 'Copy Movie Audio to Sequence' and solo/ unsolo that for reference.
I then mute the audio on the movie but when I close (and save), the movie is un-muted when I re-open the project.

This happens if I pull the slider on the QT screen volume down or option-click the triangle.

It's not a huge deal but just annoying I have to do it every time I open the project.

Any suggestions for making the mute stick?

Not sure why that happens. My movies stay muted regardless of whether I import audio or not. The only avenue I can think of is there might be some active volume or on/off automation set for the movie tracks. I’ll be in front of in a while and see if such a setting even exists. Not sure.

If you have QT Pro 7, you can open the movie in that, then go to Window/Show Movie Properties...

Select the sound track, and just click on the Delete button at the top left.

Save or save as...

Reduces the size of the movie by whatever portion the audio was taking up.

I don't see this option available in later, non-pro versions of QT player.

Certainly an option, but I'd be more concerned that DP is not keeping the setting. Besides, I sometimes want to selectively mute movie audio but not import it, especially on longer files. In my silent film world, it's not unusual to have a two or even three hour movie file to work on.

Looking at automation possibilities but I'd also suggest a techlink to MOTU on this. Is it all projects or just one? Are the movies in stand formats?

I was getting it on a few projects with this same MP4 file and then I tried a brand new project and that same MP4 file stayed muted so :? hmmm....

I did import other DP project sequences into the problematic projects and ended up with 2 master volume tracks so maybe that caused the confusion??

Anyway, looks like it's not a DP wide bug for me so that's good.
Thanks for the responses....

I do indeed have QT7. Didn't realise it was that simple to remove the audio.
Done, and the weirdness I was having has been taken care of.
Thanks again!

Just to follow up on my exploration, there don't appear to be any automation aspects to the movie window, so it might just be some weirdness embedded in the video file. Again, I've never had that problem but I have had video file issues and re-exporting them always solves the problem.

In the absence (or reluctance to use) Qtime 7, I personally prefer to use iSkysoft's video editor. Not only will it do anything QT7 or QTX will do, including screen recordings with sound, but way more. MP3s and pretty much any format you might want with micro control over every aspect, including editing. It's $58 for the Mac version but it is really a time saver if you have to export videos. I find it especially useful for social media and web streaming files, especially since I can save presets of custom export formats. But if you're not doing a lot of that it might not be of any interest.

Glad you got the ghosts out of you system. :unicorn:

Thanks MLC, I'll look into that video software for sure.
I have noticed ever so slightly unusual behaviour when I load a sequence from another DP project and drag it right into an existing sequence.

Which makes sense to me as every chunk has its own set of individual settings. I'm thinking maybe that's what happened in this case.
In each case, I may have had the same video in both sequences, one muted, one un-muted. Must check that!

Anyway, it's sorted now which is good news :)

Just following up on this in case any else comes across it.
After a bit of experimenting, I discovered that duplicating the chunk of a sequence which has a movie with the sound up will create the issue I was experiencing.
That is, the new sequence movie will have the sound up when the project is re-opened even if the sound is turned down on the new sequence and saved on close.

It will stay like this (for me anyway) even after changes are made in the new sequence.

However, I discovered that simply opening a different sequence within the project, returning to the problematic sequence and then muting will get rid of the problem.
It seems like a re-load of a different sequence re-sets everything.

Kind of a weird one, which kept catching me out. I couldn't figure it out as it seemed random.

I'm still on DP7 so this behaviour may have been eliminated in subsequent versions.
