Starting at only $6k for an 8-core :|, and maxing out at 28-core! No mention in the keynote of the specs of the $6k config. Either way it looks pretty damn amazing. Super configurable and even brings back PCIe as so many had hoped it would...any guesses on the price of a 28-core MacPro?

The specs of the $6K is 8 core, 32G RAM, 256G SSD, 580x GPU. On paper, worse than the base model iMac Pro although I doubt that it will actually be worse.

Win10 machines doing similar tasks for the film industry sell up to $150k: twin 28 Core CPUs, 1TB RAM, 8TB SSD. Vega Pro I GPU.

I’m only now finding out about this, but I have to say I’m heartened to see PCIe slots again!!! Makes me wonder if maybe MOTU will see fit to continue to update drivers for their PCIe-424 card and maybe... just maybe add an AudioWire connector to new interfaces? Oh and at least maybe my UAD-2 Duo card might survive? Definitely might make me look at UA plugs again if the prices become more reasonable.

That said, it’s not like I can afford the $6K base model anytime soon so I’ll hang back with my 12 core cheese grater. But hey... maybe I’ll catch this in a couple of years when the lucky early adopters sell theirs on the used market.

Anyway, it’s expensive, but my gut reaction is that Apple may have redeemed themselves here. The 8 slots is a very good sign that they may finally “get it.”

Wow, it's HUGE!

Since I was very young I realized
I never wanted to be human size
So I avoid the crowds and traffic jams
They just remind me of how small I am
Because of this longing in my heart
I'm going to start the growing art
I'm going to grow now and never stop
Think like a mountain, grow to the top

Tall, tall, tall
I want to be tall, tall, tall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
And if I'm not tall, tall, tall
Then I will grow, grow, grow
Because I'm not tall
Tall, tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall
I want to be tall, tall, tall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
As big as a wall, wall, wall
And if I'm not tall, tall, tall
Then I will grow, grow, grow
Because I'm not tall
Tall, tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall

With concentration
My size increased
And now I'm fourteen stories high
(At least)
Empire State human
Just a bored kid
I'll go to Egypt to be
The pyramids

Tall, tall, tall
(Brick by brick)
I want to be tall, tall, tall
(Stone by stone)
As big as a wall, wall, wall
(Growing 'til he's)
As big as a wall, wall, wall
(Fully grown)
And if I'm not tall, tall, tall
(Brick by brick)
Then I will grow, grow, grow
(Stone by stone)
Because I'm not tall
(Growing 'til he's)
Tall, tall, tall, tall
(Fully grown)
Tall, tall, tall
Tall, tall, tall
(Fetch more water)
I want to be tall, tall, tall
(Fetch more sand)
As big as a wall, wall, wall
(Biggest person)
As big as a wall, wall, wall
(In the land)
And if I'm not tall, tall, tall
(Fetch more water)
Then I will grow, grow, grow
(Fetch more sand)
Because I'm not tall
(Biggest person)
Tall, tall, tall, tall

Tall, tall, tall

The shore will be littered with bargain 5,1 dual cpu cheese graters within a few month of the 7,1 ship date. If you are still running a 3,1 or earlier, it will be something to keep an eye on.

Good point. Maybe for some of us on a budget it might be a good time to consider getting some 5,1s for VEP hosts and offloading VIs?

Without naming VEP, the keynote mentioned that many users were using slave machined for VIs and that will no longer be necessary with the 7.1. This was after they ran a demo of the next Logic with a thousand tracks and VIs.

Any word on whether this generation will still have that audio glitch issue caused by the security chip?

The last I've seen is that the problem still persists for USB connections:

That’s great. But yours truly won’t be able to afford a 7,1 for a long while, so if the price of used 4,1 and 5,1 machines plummets after the 7,1 release then I may finally join the VEP world as it will be a lot cheaper and I won’t have to configure a Windows machine as a slave.

I’d love to think Logic performance will translate to DP performance, but I think about all the people who tell me DP runs better when you host VIs in VEP on the SAME Mac rather than run VIs *within* DP, and I have to wonder.

Unfortunately Apple has effectively killed the old Mac Pro. Im sure you saw it over at GS but Mojave is the end of the line for all of us that just ran out and bought video cards to make Mojave compatible.
Thankfully the specs for the new Logic still show it supporting High Sierra.

For me, this is going back to the days of my 2006 Mac Pro. Was no longer in the financial situation I was when I was able to buy new PowerMacs and Mac Pros, so that thing stayed running 10.7 until 2016 when I finally bought this 2010 MP Im using now. Just spent quite a bit of money this year with the video card, a new 1TB SSD, CPU swap to a six core 3.33, faster RAM for the new CPU, updated Airport/Bluetooth card, etc.. Guess it was only a matter of time (like my old MP and my last G4 and G5 hah) but I was hoping since they allowed us the video upgrade, we would at least get one more OS.

The new Mac Pro is designed to run these new versions of Logic and Final Cut Pro, not the other way around. It may be that these new apps won't run that well on lesser machine. Ok... no one will know before September anyway.

Of course this will translate into a monster machine for DP and other AV apps. Until MOTU and other developers make the decision to support the 7.1 at the expense of other hardware, I just don't see this as an issue.

Based on the announced entry $ and the current prices of the Mini and iMac Pro, I'll get a price prediction together over the next few days.

Going to some events at the WWDC tomorrow and will see if I can glean more info and play with one of these.
