Boo, Motu, Boo!!

Post by Hideout »

Sorry but I think that a two month grace period for a free upgrade to DP10 is downright stingy! I've only had DP9.5 since September. Humbug! :x :x

So how long would it be for Ok for you then?

What should MOTU do, exactly?

Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

There wouldn't be any harm in asking MOTU for the update, if you bought 9.5 in September. You never know, they might just have some lovely unpublished policy. However, you might not want to lead with "boo!" when you reach out.

Sometimes with the timings of things, it makes sense to skip a paid version. The price is the same whether you update from 9 to 10, or 9 to 11.

Sometimes you just have to buy when you have to buy......I know that doesn't help......several other platforms I use officially keep a 30 day grace period, so......60 is better?

I did reach out. Here was their response; "Thank you for your email. I'm afraid the free upgrade to DP10 cutoff point is set at November 1st, 2018. I apologize for the inconvenience."

I understand that there will be a need to pay for an upgrade at some point but not even 5 months after you bought the last upgrade? Seriously?

Bummer. It's an unfortunate early impression for you, being so new to the software.

DP 9.5 is magnificent software, and you might not be as mindful of that fact in this particular moment. You've not been robbed. You (hopefully) knew what you were paying for, i.e., you knew what v9.5 had going for it. And you knew that at some point, a new version would come. You can either only buy software right after a new release, or you can get to work with the version that's out.

I don't think it is such a poor reflection on MOTU. It is just an unfortunate factor of this particular model of software sales. Still, I STRONGLY prefer it to the subscription model (not to take this topic off the rails).

You can hold off on updating until v11, and by then "the wound" will have scarred over.

If I was off a week or 10 days, I'd ask politely and stress that, had I known, I would gladly have waited to buy.

This worked for me with MakeMusic (Finale) last November, PG Music (Band-In-A-Box) in 2017 and with MOTU when I upgraded from AudioDesk to DP 2.71 shortly before 3 was announced (was that 20 years ago?).

It has never worked with other companies — in some cases when I missed it by only 24 hours.

I always ask if I think appropriate. Worst case? Sometimes I am told, No. If I never ask, then, Yes, is always off the table.

September to November is a stretch but I applaud you for asking.

This won't be much comfort, but there's a good chance DP10.0 won't be stable enough for professional work right out of the gate. I usually anticipate waiting at least a month for a .01 or .1 update to commit a new version. ...of course I'm hoping this isn't the case for my sake, but it might help take the edge off for you.

It sucks you fell in this crack. I'm sorry Hideout. A 3 month grace period does sound more reasonable. If you'd have asked me is September what the odds were that 10 would be announced at NAMM I'd of 50/50 at best. And even then I would have anticipated a Q3 ship date. Unfortunately for you they surprised everyone.

Agreed. Once burned by DP 6 makes one wary! I was going to early upgrade but 9's working fine. Another thing (especially if you're mid project) is the possible re-learning curve. I have things set very specifically and I know the interface well. I don't ant to be distracted by the new whistles and bells and layout. I still want to control interface colors (hello Amplidood...) and see things the way I see them in the current version.

I might have a break in the Spring sometime to futz with this, but there's a very good chance I won't be an early adopter, at least not until I see a lot of positive (and few negative) reports on a variety of systems. :unicorn:

Thanks, but I'm not actually new to DP. I had been using 7.24 most happily for years and also because I could not upgrade my Mac to anything higher than 10.7. I have always been happy to save my pennies and upgrade to the next version but this experience along with the perfunctory "I apologize for the inconvenience" response pissed me off. For $200, I'm giving very serious thought to Logic Pro.

No contest, IMO, especially if you're working to picture or do serious MIDI editing. I also hate the way Apple apps all look and work like I'm on a friggin' phone. Just sayin...

Two months is a pretty long time, IMO. I'd be disappointed, but not mad at the company. I'd certainly please my case further, but it's like the stock market. Timing is everything.

If you've been using DP for a while, you get a feel for when things might be updated. To me, it seemed pretty obvious MOTU would announce DP10 at NAMM this year. Now, I'm on 9, and have been for about 1.5 years, so it's not a big deal for me, but I would have probably waited until NAMM to upgrade to 9 if I wasn't there already. Once 10 was announced, I'm sure the upgrade from a new purchase of 9 would be gratis.

Sorry for your pain. But consider for a moment if this were Apple you were dealing with. Do you think they would give you a free pass? I sincerely doubt it.

I'm pretty happy with DP9.5 at this point, but I am sure I will be upgrading once we get one or two bug-squashing bumpgrades.

Mojave is another story entirely. :smash:
