Linked MTP/AV USB and Real Time

Post by tmav »

I have two MTP/AV USB linked using the Net Port. I've had some minor glitches that I've always just chalked up to some piece of equipment sending data I need to filter. However, I noticed that real time messages, sending clock source on the second unit acts weird visually on the display. When real time messages are being received the port lights up constantly on the first unit, but the second on the real time seems intermittent.

I'm probably beating a dead horse with asking this on the forum as my guest most people have moved on from the MTP/AV units. Unfortunately I have not moved on to needing to rely on software like the newer Motu units and I love the MTP/AV units strictly hardware capabilities. I wish Motu still made these units or something comperable.

If anyone has any inquiry as to what I should see on the second unit real time messages I'd appreciate the feedback.

May be beating that dead horse here but MOTU Support is usually pretty good about these things. They answered questions about my 20 year old Micro Express last year.

Since you mentioned the Net port, I'll assume you know what you're doing so I'll ask the obvious:

Any possibility that your AppleTalk cable is too old needs replacing?

Are you using an Apple Modem cable instead? The cables look identical but one is a straight-through while the other is a mirror. This means that the pins-out are different but I no longer remember which is which.

I tossed my last Apple Printer/Modem switch last year. These could use either cable with a switch to change the pins from one to the other. There was a time before the B&W G3 when these were necessary if you wanted to get online and print—but not at the same time—with some Macs.

I got a reply! I'm surprised. Thanks mikehalloran!

I can't remember where I got the cable from. It was years ago and since it configures itself as two units, first showing 1-8 and second showing 9-16 in the hardware, routing works between units when using only hardware, and Logic also shows all ports via one usb cable and routing works I assumed the cable must be good.

But that doesn't necessarily mean it is. I guess the cable could be wrong, or damaged and only rear its brokenness is wonky ways.

I remember the cable was difficult to find. I believe I got the cable on eBay. I actually think I got two as I wan't sure the first one ordered was actually apple talk which the Motu manual states is the cable needed. The second one actually came in the original packaging as an apple talk cable. I don't think I used the one that came in the apple talk box because it came second and the first one appeared to be working. Plus the one that came in the apple talk box was very long, much longer than needed. I'll have to go dig out the apple talk box and try that cable.

PS. How did you get a large profile picture. Is it because you're important?
PSS. I just saw your location. That is funny!

Well I dug out the other apple talk cable in the Apple box. Before replacing the cable I tested and did not have any issue. So looks like something just must have gotten hosed the other day. At least I found my other cable in case I need it.
