Upgrade to a 2TB SSD?

Post by Todzilla »

Here's my mac: late 2011 i7 Quad Proc 2.2GhZ macbook pro, 16G RAM.
  • Originally came with a 500GB platter drive. Cloned the drive to a Crucial 256GB SSD. Awesome.
  • Outgrew that, I cloned and upgraded to a Crucial 500GB. Awesomer.
  • Outgrew that, I cloned and upgraded to a Crucial 1TB. Not quite as awesome.
Mac w 1TB Crucial SSD takes longer to start and function. It's not a huge difference, but makes me wonder if I hit a wall of sorts. This is especially important as I ponder upgrading to a 2TB SSD. Is it foolhardy to contemplate upgrading such an old machine to a huge SSD?

Thanks

A Samsung 860 EVO 2T can be had for less than $300 if you shop around. Amazon Prime was out of stock yesterday but they'll arrive soon (other Amazon sellers have it now for $400).

The WD Blue 3D and SanDisk 3D are two names for the same drive (made by Toshiba) They're excellent as well and are priced in the $300 range as is the Crucial MX500.

All of the above have a 5 year warranty. The 860 tests just a hair better but you will never notice the difference in real world performance.

Avoid the Micron 1100. It's an OEM/VAR SSD with no warranty being dumped on the market. Last year, when it was $200 cheaper than everybody, it was an ok choice but now that other prices have dropped, I wouldn't. Micron expects the sellers to back these up and has a big disclaimer to this effect on their web site. Same drive as the Crucial MX300, an older, discontinued SSD with a 3 year warranty.

The 860 EVO is also available as a 4T drive for $769. I'm waiting for the price to come down (soon I hope) before I take the plunge.

Nobody's actually answered your question; I didn't see any request for bargain prices or the like, so here's my best answer, mate:

No.

Mac 2012 12C Cheese Grater, OSX 10.13.6
MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O

I had a MP 3,1 in which I installed internally 6g SSDs over a period of time. The 6gs were overkill for the 3,1 bus but I figured I’d be able to use them in an upgraded MP down the road. I upgraded to a MP 6,1 last year and now they are performing to speed at no additional cost as externals streaming samples and audio.

So no, as Monkey Man wrote, not foolhardy
