Quicktime Sounds (can't get default bank to play in DP)

Post by gguter »

Hello,

I am trying to play some sequences using my quicktime default sounds (the ones I set under system prefs->quicktime->Advanced) within DP. I use gigastudio too, but this is just for listening to bunches of MIDI files really fast. Via Interapplication MIDI, I have setup apple software synth for output in DP, but I know it's not putting out the same quicktime default samples that I get if I play these MIDI files from within the quicktime player itself.

Also, and sorry for asking, but what's the dif between quicktime, DLS, and Apple Software Synth?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Gerhard

First of all Quictime provides services for both the Apple Software Synth
and the DLS Music Player. I think of Apple Software Synth as a quick and easy General MIDI player whereas with DLS you can tweak the sounds more and even use Soundfont samples. Also if you want to bounce a track i believe you have to use DLS.

Thanks for the help. I guess my follow up question would have to be: is there anything else I need to do besides assigning my quicktime default GMsoundfont set (system prefs->quicktime->Advanced) to get my better sounding custom set to play within DP 4.6?

Even when I add DLS as an instrument track, I am still getting the crummy apple softsynth sounds and not the bank set up as default under quicktime.

Thanks.

Ok, figured this one out for myself. Needed to double click DLS Music Device under tack name to pull up Apple Sound bank Synth properties. doh!

Thanks,

I have used the DLS music device before, but I am new to the soundfont world. How does it work to use soundfont libraries? Are you driving those sound files with the DLS music device? Are the garage band instruments accesable the same way?

All you do is throw your soundfonts in /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks folder and then choose the DLS player as an instrument track in DP. From the drop down menu you change to your soundfont from quicktime synth.
You can't use Garageband instruments though.
