Simple Question.

Post by Slickie »

I checked on this board a while ago regarding my computer running terribly slow with just a few tracks recorded. My specs are Mac G4 800 mhz(original quicksilver) with the 1 stock hard drive in it running everything (DP 4.52 and Reason 2.5) also have 1 gig ram. With just a few tracks recorded it starts running too slow to use almost. I was told to get another hard drive to dedicate to DP. also to get techtools to optimize my drive. I am ready to buy my hard drive but I have a question or two.

Once I get it do I reinstall DP and reason onto the external drive and then start them up from there or leave them on my G4s internal and change settings in DP - not sure how that is done.

thanks to all that answer.

I've got the same single 800 G4 as you do. It's not my studio computer but I do take it to do live recordings of bands in clubs.
I use DP 4.52 and a 24i interface.

Last time I used it I recorded 16 44.1, 16 bit tracks with no problem. I could play back the tracks for the band to listen to between sets and the computer worked flawlessly. I probably could have done 32 tracks easy. All on the single hard drive that came in the G4. It was partitioned into two with software on one and audio on the other. Ram is 768 megs.

Point is you should be able to do a LOT more than a few tracks on that G4.

I agree with the dog, something's wrong. I can play back 15 uprocessed tracks on my wife's Ibook G3/800. You might want to look into the health of your hard disk, and it's speed.

TechTool is good to have either way, but in my opinion optimizing won't buy you much.

That said, having an external drive is a very good idea. Leave your system and applications on the internal drive and use the external drive exclusively for audio.
