Drag & Drop not working in DP9

Post by plum »

DP8 No Problem: Drag and Drop multiple files right onto the conductor track and Tracks created in Sequence Editor! Right from my desktop so easy...

Tried making a track first still no luck...

DP9 What's wrong?
The outline lights up like it wants to but it is unable to complete the task...

I'm not even sure if this trick is in the manual.
There's nothing like coming home from a Jam at a friends house with a usb stick and dragging the files in in a few seconds to an empty DP window!

P.S. I searched here but found nothing yet...

Thanks a lot for anyones' time!

Into the Conductor track? Also, are the files being converted? Check the background processing window.

It is audio files you're talking about?

perhaps something unique to your files or setup.

maybe try copying from the USB stick to the hard drive first.

could be a permissions issue, what are the ownership settings on the project folder? Read and Write for yourself is typical.

Right. Try dragging into a blank area on the left side of the Tracks window.

All good points.

Move the tracks onto your Mac first. Then eject the media so you don't accidently try to drag the original files into DP by having the wrong window open.

Permissions problems with files imported from USB sticks, SD cards, CDs and DropBox are far more common than you think. Not just audio—Word and many other file types behave the same.

The easiest way to deal with it is to zip (compress) the file first. When you unzip on your computer, the system automatically grants the proper permissions. Not necessary with email attachments as this is done automatically.

The other way is to do GetInfo on the files and grant read/write privileges for all users—check Apply to enclosed files and folders. You can do this to an entire USB or SD card if formatted for a Mac. Otherwise you must move the files to your Mac first.

Sometimes audio generated on another system just will not load. When that happens, you need to strip and rebuild the header. QuickTime 7.6.6 is quick and easy but many other utilities work. Use it to convert a .wav to .aif and back. The raw audio is unaffected but it now has a header that drops properly into DP. There's a studio that sends tracks to me and about one out of ten needs this done. Some utilities can do batch conversion such as TwistedWave and DSPQuatro.

Sorry I should have clarified: I forgot how exacting one needs to be when addressing issues with the forum setting...
I always drag files off of the USB stick first to the desktop...

Then I create a new empty project and make sure the conductor track is visible in sequence editor...

In DP8 All I have ever had to do [problably my favorite short-cut & function]

is drag a group of audio tracks right on to the conductor track in the sequence editor.
Never needed to 'create' a track first...

Bingo: Tracks are imported and transformed as needed to match the kHz, bit, and or frame rate when and if needed...

Anyway I'm going to finish reading the suggestions...

However, this is working just fine with DP8 and these particular files!

Thanks

It's clearly a bug.
Unless there is some kind of setting I am missing somewhere like soundbite window settings.
But I don't think so...

Please someone try this and let me know what happens...
Drag anything even an mp3 off of the desk top...

Like we said, try dragging to the left side of an empty Tracks window in a new project. You don't need to create tracks first. If dragging to the conductor track in the SE ever worked, I don't recall it.

No it is not working in the Tracks window.
And it has always working the same in the SE as long as the conductor track is visible.
The left side does the same thing in SE...

I don't have 8.07 installed any more so I can't test it, but it always did work when I did. I just tried the Track window with 9.02 and it worked with AIF, WAV and MID files. I have found DP a bit fussy now and then with some variations on AIF files, and so then I batch load them into DSP-Q first and resave. I think Mike suggested that QT will do the same.

QT 10 in the Applications folder will not do this.

You need to use QT 7.6.6 and it must be installed in the Utilities folder. It will convert only one file at a time using the the Export function.

If you don't have QT 7.6.6, it's still available.

If you have a QT 6 or 7 Pro key, it will still work provided you have it recorded somewhere. You can no longer retrieve your Pro key from your support (now iTunes) account—lots of anger over that one as you can imagine.

Other builds ot QT 7 are still available for Windows and older Mac OS.

Interesting note about the older QT 7 browser plugin.

I do. It and DP 9.02 behave identically.

Since file privileges and corrupt headers are two well known culprits here, try those solutions first.

I would fix privileges in Get Info first. If you do not see your admin account listed as a file owner, click on the + and select it from the drop down list. Grant Read & Write. At some point it will ask for your admin password to unlock the file.

I looked at DP9 Get Info and noticed it was different from DP8.
So I turned on the Read and Write for DP9 and of the folder where my files are and NO luck...

Is there somewhere else I am supposed to make sure the Permissions allow for read and write....

Thanks for your time...

It's not DP9 where you have to ensure permissions, it's the files you want to import.
