Mach5 on old G4 400?

Post by sholland »

I am running DP 4.5 on a Powerbook G4 1.5ghz w/ 2 gigs of RAM and a 5400rpm drive. This laptop is a great machine, but...
When I was running DP 2.7 on my old G4/400, I used Unity DS-1. Now I'm thinking about going to Mach5, but I've been reading about people with pretty up to date powerful desktop computers that find their CPUs overworked by DP and Mach5 together.
I'd like to hear opinions on the idea of installing OS X on my old G4 and using it as a dedicated machine for Mach5. Can Mach5 be on a different drive than the host app (DP 4.5)? Would a 400 machine be able to handle it even if that was all the machine had to do?
OS X (10.3.9) PB G4 1.5ghz, 2 gig RAM, FW Cardbus/DP 4.6/MOTU 896HD/MOTU 828mkII/Focusrite Octopre/Digital Timepiece/Millenia HV-3C/Aphex 207/Glyph 120 external drive
