Upgraded to El Capitan, couldn't record audio, now can

Post by Martin Tenbones »

Hello All!

As the title says, I just upgraded a week ago to El Capitan (I use DP8), today when I attempted to return to work, audio doesn't record to tracks. I see it in Cuemix, and hear it, I see it in the audio monitor of DP, but when I record, nothing gets written to disc.

Thanks....

Did you install the new beta audio drivers from MOTU?

THIS is the kind of "ouchy" that makes me reluctant to upgrade to El Cap. So glad I stayed put. Everything is working and I intend to keep it that way.

Normally I'd start with "repair permissions" but you can't do that in El Cap. That has me wondering if some apps may simply never work again as they might not be updated to that new paradigm.

Check your write permission on the recording drive?

So now I seem to have repaired it by moving the output bundles around, then back to where they were.

And i didn't download that beta driver cause i don't use the USB. Correct?

Anyway, its working, but I don't know why.

I will look into this permission business.

I thought El Cap removed permissions. You can still alter them manually? That sounds dangerous.

Well you are on DP9 which works well with El Capitan. Some things don't work presumably (although Bias Peak 7 still works - better than it did under Yosemite). You can't repair permissions - and I am not sure what you do now when you update software. But so far so good - but I haven't tried DP8 with El Cap, and early versions of El Cap screwed up audio although the latest updates fixed all that. But so far so good....

It is not supposed to be necessary but, yes, you can repair permissions in OS 10.11. Terminal has always been a choice.

The quickest and easiest way: copy the following command and paste into Terminal, then hit <Return>:

sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs --volume /

Enter your admin password when requested. Previous terminal commands for Repair Permissions no longer work in El Cap.

Safe Boot (boot while holding Shift key) is also supposed to repair permissions in El Capitán. I have not been able to test to see if this is true. If so, this is new as Safe Boot did not repair permissions before.

Do Terminal commands chmod, chown, etc., still work?

I was referring to permissions via the Get Info window. Sorry, I should have been more clear. Anyway, I'm glad the problem seems to have been resolved. I wonder if trashing the prefs would have yielded the same results.

Yes but Apple has tightened up the syntax in many of the commands. What worked in previous builds of OSX may not work in 10.11.

For example, the command I posted works to repair permissions does work but others I know no longer do so.

I wonder too.. permission repair has been a staple of Mac OS maintenance for so long.. is it just not necessary anymore? Why am I still doing it on 10.10.5? Why does it still seem to help?

I understood Apple built this into OS X. Much like they did the defrag of smaller files, the daily, weekly, monthly cleanup, and all that other stuff we used to run utilities for. I never did understand why, if OS X knew a permission was wrong, and what it should be, it didn't just change it.

So everything is still working, and i don't know why. Best not think about it.

The moving the bundle markers around seems to have done it.
