Mac mini optical in ?

I can send digital out ( optical combined jack ) from the Mini i.e. iTunes ...
Tested by plugging into 896mk3H > TOSLINK ADAT .
But I don't get input from the optical combined - in jack, not even when I try with the working optical out looped back in...
The input stays analog in sound prefs...
Anyone used the optical in successfully ?
I read that it switches to digital in if a valid dig signal is recognized, but why is the working dig out signal not recognized ?
10.6.8, combined analog / digital i/o on the Mac mini

Need more information. What year Mac Mini? How are you making the connection?

problem solved...
I tried another Mini 1,1 ( kind of 'a spare parts mini' ) and this one worked, swapped audio boards and all is fine.
