two computer setup

Post by cloudy house »

got my dual 1.8 G5 with 2.5gig of RAM, DP4.12, M5, RMX, atmosphere, plugsound, blah, blah, blah...works great...close to no problems...yay for me...I also have an imac 800mhz G4 w/ 1gig of RAM...not a powerhouse, but not a wimp, either...love to hear thoughts on incorporating two Macs in my studio...was thinking about maybe using it as a dedicated REASON machine or something...I dunno what kinda options there are...seems kinda silly to be using the imac for nothing but email

Have you considered networking those two machines?

Just a thought here.

I've got 3 machines on a network. It's very simple and somewhat inexpensive to set up a home netweork using ethernet connection thru a router.
QUICKSILVER G4 dual 1G process with 1.5 GB RAM
audiophile 2496 PCI card(MIDI/audio in/out)
running TIGER and PANTEHR

M-Audio USB MIDIsport 8 x 8 (MIDI interface)

8500/Sonnet G3 + USB and Firewire cards running PANTHER and OS 9

I'm having trouble with Garritan Personal Orchestra, Native Instruments Kontakt, etc. and someone suggested networking two Macs. I'm a babe in the woods with that idea -- could you explain how to do this? I've heard some conversation about "MIDI Over Lan," "V-Stack," etc. but I'm not sure how it all works. The goal is to relieve the pressure on my main G4's CPU.

i think thats more suitable for cubase or logic7 user. not dp
if you have a spare audio i/o, use it with the imac. you can use your imac as a 2trk recorded in replacement of a DAT or CD recorder.Just a thought.

Have a look here : apulsoft-wormhole
All you need to do is to put your two macs in a network which is very easy if you are using OSX.
MacPro 5.1 2x3.46 twelve core, 64Gig, OSX 10.15, Mac Studio Max 32Gig, DP11.13, RME HDSPe FX, Softube Console 1 & Fader, UAD-2 quad, Soundtoys v5, UVI Falcon 3.0, GForce Mellotron & String Machine , Waves Rennaissance...

I'm not exactly sure myself, but I do know that Logic can stream from another computer like an external hard disc for plug-ins. If MOTU would do that, it would solve a lot of problems for amyone who's not on a G5. I've been told by Apple people (but not music people) that ethernet networking for DP would be pretty slow.
You may be better off using the iMac for other more mundane apps and dedicate the G4 to music.

I use a dual 450 and Wormhole via LAN 10 / 100, to get some plugs done on it. On the main dual1.2 mdd DP and Wormhole, on the dual 450 Rax and Wormhole.
1 Altiverb in lo latency is pretty much enough for the dual though...

Best

My boss is using a rather complex setup...He uses 5 computers.

One is a Very old G4 running Vision for sequencing, two PCs run Giga, and two dual G4s run DP4. He uses the Vision computer to sequence and record on. All the other computers run digital instruments. It works like this:

The Vision computer is connected to a Yamaha 01v and a MOTU MIDI Timepiece. The other machines have small 2 MIDI channel, 2 audio channel interfaces. They take MIDI input from the Timepiece on the Vision computer, and output audio back to the 01v. I know it is a weird, innefficent way of doing things, but it scales decently, and seems to work well enough.

Maybe for your purposes: To run the imac from the G4, buy a cheap MIDI I/O and Audio I/O combo interface, and then connect it to whatever interface(s) you currently use.

The one problem my boss runs into is the need to access all the computers, so you will need to be able to use a monitor, keyboard and mouse for both computers, or have a KVM switch, if you go about using this method.

Good Luck!
