Orchestral template suggestions
Hi to all,
I have recently bought a new pc for music production, since my old laptop couldn't keep the pace, and I'm trying the new DP 8. The specs of my pc are:
i7@3.60 GHz
RAM 32GB
OS and samples on different SSDs
HDD 7200rpm for projects
I write orchestral music, and the first thing I did was setting up a template. In fact, a pretty huge template, since I'm now drowning in RAM and it's a beautiful thing. I have around 50 MIDI tracks, routed to audio tracks so I can bounce MIDI to audio directly (and for now I have no plugins, only Kontakt for the libraries). I thought my pc could handle this, but in fact I experience some pops, clicks, stuttering and sometimes crash that totally ruin my workflow. I tried to increase the buffer size to 1024 and beyond, but that only helped a little. I even tried to load a project from the SSD, but nothing changed.
Since I'm rather new to the whole "music production" thing, and quite a noob with DP, I wonder what I'm doing wrong. Maybe I should really downsize my template? Or are there some tricks I don't know?

Not a direct answer, but check out the videos by Guy michelmore. His template has hundreds of tracks. For example:Rufus Loacker wrote:Hi to all,

Re: Orchestral template suggestions
I was going to suggest Guy Michelmore - however does he not have several slaves (macs not people) running his various orchestral libraries? That is how he can have a huge template. Without slaves, the processing can take a lot of the memory. Others may know better - maybe its just a buffer size thing, but as we know Virtual Instruments and sound libraries take a lot of juice - hence the use of slaves and more complex setups like Guy Michelmore. Not a direct answer, but check out the videos by Guy michelmore. His template has hundreds of tracks. For example:cleamon wrote:

Re: Orchestral template suggestions
Yep, it seems like he uses 4 (!) slaves for his 650+ tracks template. Mine is far more modest, so I thought my pc could run this.
I don't think it's a memory (ram) problem, since I have more than 10GB free with this template.
Furthermore, I read somewhere that DP has problems with the Lexicon Alpha audio interface, which I have. Sometimes it crashes when I select it as my audio hardware, so I prefer using the default ASIO4All drivers. Could that be a problem?

Even so, doing the math would suggest he's running 150+ (650/4) instruments per slave. I just thought those videos might contain some helpful info on tuning your template.Rufus Loacker wrote:Yep, it seems like he uses 4 (!) slaves for his 650+ tracks template. His tutorial are extremely helpful, unfortunately he doesn't speak about thecnical details :/cleamon wrote:Even so, doing the math would suggest he's running 150+ (650/4) instruments per slave.
