Startup Disk not working from OS 9 to OS X

Post by James Steele »

Whenever I attempt to boot into OS X Tiger from my OS 9 partition it doesn't work. I run "Startup Disk" in OS 9 and select the OS X folder I want to start with and when the machine restarts I just get the screen with the Apple on it and it gets stuck. I have to insert the OS X CD, restart it manually, hold down "C" to boot from the CD. Then if I use Start Up disk from the installer disk and choose the same system folder I wanted to boot from before, it will start up the next time. Somehow my OS 9 Startup Disk utility isn't "blessing" the system folder I want??? Any ideas.

This won't fix the problem but if you hold down the X key when you restart, the computer will start up from OSX no matter what system folder is chosen. Again, not a fix but quicker than starting up from a CD.

Thanks for the suggestion, Wayne. Unfortunately it didn't work. I'm using an old G4/350 sawtooth that's been processor upgraded to a G4/1.5ghz machine. I don't know that the X key means anything to my machine's rom.

Lately I've been having trouble accessing anything having to do with Yahoo (mail or groups) on OS 9 and Explorer but that's another problem to try and solve.

That sux James, sorry to hear your troubles.
Have you tried booting in safe mode?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
Maybe a gander over @ Apple may help. if you have'nt already.
There are some knowledgable folks there(obviously).

I thought I'd never go to OSX LOL:rolleyes: Went from a G3 Beige 226 beefed up to 500mhz-directly to a G4 dual 800. I could not believe the difference!! Well it was snapier for Dp in OS9, but there is so much more for OSX. I actually do have the main HD partitioned for OS9& OSX(Panther). But sometimes I wonder why. Ever since (1/05) installing OSX, I've been to OS9 maybe 10 times-and thats for some serioulsy old apps. I reboot back into Panther real quick. Hope you're not hangin' on for Waves sake.

Hi James,

I don't know if this will work on your computer but try restarting while holding down the Option key. This also won't fix your problem but it might suffice until you get to the root of the problem. When I use the Option key while restarting, it gives me a choice of which disk to start up from. It does take a little while so be patient. Good luck.

Peace,

Rade

Well here's a "cheat" solution:

download yourself a copy of XPostFacto ( version 4 ) and use it ( effectively it's a control panel startup disk ).

Just park XPostFacto on your desktop and double click it and select your startup disk.

The first time I used this "startup control panel" it took this dumb brain several trys until I took a hard look and saw that I can boot into OS 9 or OS X.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I haven't tried these yet as I've been busy with other things the last few days and my problem is more an annoyance than anything else. I know about holding down the Option key on startup and that didn't help me. I'll investigate further when I have the time. Thanks for the suggestions.

What version of OS9 are you using? I think only 9.2.2 recognized a second system folder.
