What could cause this?
I recorded 2 bars of MIDI notes triggering a Roland Gaia from a Korg TR 88. Then on the same MIDI track I input the same series of notes played on the Gaia this time. I noticed there was a slight timbre and volume difference when played on the Gaia. So I changed the velocity and note length of all the notes to be identical. Yet, when I play back the the 4 bars of notes, 2 bars played from the Korg and 2 bars from the Gaia there is still a difference. How can this be? The notes are on the same MIDI track and channel, triggering the same synth. Has anyone else experienced this? Any explanations would be welcome.

Re: What could cause this?
So you have the MIDI output of both the Korg and the Roland going into your interface?
You said you matched the velocity of the notes exactly. Perhaps there are other controllers that might be affecting the sound-- aftertouch? CCx (continuous controls)? Mod wheel?
If you open the Event list for the MIDI track you can look and see if there is other data in there than can be affecting the quality of the sound.

I hardly ever use the event list, but I see that the 2 bars played on the Gaia have duplicate notes which of course causes the difference in sound. Now I just have to find out why the Gaia is spitting out double notes, probably something in the set-up. Thanks for your reply stubbsonic.

If both synths are connected to the input, you might have some patch-thru or feedback.
If you turn on "Multi Record" in the setup menu, it will allow you to specify a device & channel for the input. That might prevent the double-recording (and subsequent "flanging" of doubled notes).

Oddly enough it wasn't the usual flanged note sound. The "Gaia" played notes just sounded a bit louder and fuller or deeper. Actually they sounded real good. It might have been that patch I was using, but there was no flanging. Go figure.
