Mackie HR624 or HR824?

Post by Pasz »

I have a small room (9,8 x 8,8 x x 8,5 (ft) = 733 cubic feet, which I will treat acoustically with the help of Alton F. Everest's books :) ) in which I want to mix. Now I know that the room is a too small (1500 cubic feet is the minimum) but it'll have to do!

All I need now is a set of nearfields (I'm leaving my Behringer Truths at the place I record)! The music I mix is mostly hard rock/metal. After doing some research I think I narrowed down the list to two: The Mackie HR624 and the Mackie HR824. Now I read that although the 824 goes deeper, the 624 has a tighter mid-low/low end.

Now I understand I should check them out before I buy, and I will do just that, but I'm just curious what you guys have to say about these speakers. Are they the right choice for me? Maybe you have a better alternative?

Hey Pascal, my room is small too (about 1,000 cubic feet) and I love my HR824's. One of the most difficult things in my small room through the years has been low-end definition. I think the 824's do a better job with this than the 624's and you might be frustrated not being able to hear more of what's really going on in the low frequencies. But this is a pretty subjective subject. You can learn to mix on almost anything, so go with what sounds good to your ears, then see how your mixes flesh out on as many other systems as you have access to. Let us know what you end up doing. :)
