MIDI controller works in MIDI monitor and not in tracks

Hi,
I received a project file from a colleague, I opened it up and DP recognizes my MIDI controller in the audio monitor which shows activity. All the instruments in the sequence work when I play it, but I can't find a way, when I put the MIDI tracks on record, to play the instruments with my MIDI keyboard.
If I create a project from scratch everything works fine.
Here's how I thought DP works:
- create an instrument track
- create a MIDI track
- set the output of the MIDI track to the instrument track.
I noticed that the input of the MIDI track shows up when I turn the multi record on, and in that case I put my MIDI controller as an input, but still nothing happens.
Am I missing something?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Of course, you did set the output of the instrument track to the desired interface analog output.
Directly or to a properly set aux track, thru a bus.

Yes, because I can hear the sequence when it's played.
Even if I create a new instrument, for instance Bassline, with a new MIDI track, nothing happens.

I'd suggest you open the Audio MIDI setup and make sure the controller is "blessed". Then in DP, open devices and see if there's some weird routing setup. Also, if you see input with multi record on, check to see what the MIDI input is set to and compare channel assignments.

Could it be that you are in Multirecord?
