Time machine Woes and cures in Maverick

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

I wiped my Time Machine (dual) backups, cleaned out about 700GB of old movie project files and other unnecessary stuff and started to redo a new, fresh, leaner Time Machine backup, but it stalled at about 10GB and was "stuck."

The cause was Spotlight trying to index the drives as soon as data went on them (even though I had requested it not do so in the privacy settings).

The cure is to disable Spotlight in Terminal as described in this link. Once the backup completes, reverse the process (instructions also at the link) and Spotlight will be back. I know a lot of folks don't like Spotlight. Once it does it's business it doesn't get in my way. YMMV.

That didn't occur to me but I experienced it as I switched all the Macs around here to twin backups (only mine was running two before). The block goes away eventually. I still have one more to go so this will save some time. Thanks!
