Anyone thinking of getting one of the new coffee cans?

Post by BKK-OZ »

Cheers,
BK

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

I have two areas that I work. My "recording" studio is only for tracking. The control room is too small for mixing so that's done in another space (what one of my client's calls the mixing lab), so I have two set-ups. The older of my two Mac Pros is in the tracking area and it's getting to the point where there are compatibility issues. I think I've got about a year left with this set up. Hopefully by then we'll see where this "coffee can" stands. This could be the future of desktop towers or it could be Apple's Edsel. Time will tell. I ain't jumping in just yet.

In addition to DP, I also do 3d animation/graphics. While my old mac pro is doing fine with DP, I have been struggling with the graphics side of things. Unless there are huge problems reported, I think I am in for a new MP.

Not me, for a while at least. There are just too many unknowns with the new model, and I'm at the point where I need reliability over potential. So I opted to get the last tower model Mac Pro and will live with that the foreseeable future.

I'm thinking about it but i won't be doing so unless this machine bites the dust. Right now it is screaming fast. It just loves Mavericks. Me too! :P

I am doing fine for now, but some day after a few upgrades maybe. We all know what went down with the first Mac Pro tower.

Ha!
Makes me wonder if you can spray-paint the outside of the new MP safely.

Do they make Thunderbolt interface cabinets for holding PCIe cards like the MOTU PCI-424 so that you cards will work with the new Mac Pro?

I think I am gonna buy one.
Still on a 2.66 quad-core here, fine for DP, but my animation taxes this thing too much, I need to see some benchmark comparisons, but I reckon it will save me mucho time.

BK

Perhaps, maybe - you think? Short of hacking the NSA supercomputers...

http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/performance/

Holy cow!

OK... There is absolutely no way in hell I can justify one for my needs. I am pretty confident that whatever it costs plus a nice monitor and a 4 bay TB-2 JBOD rack with SSDs will still come in under what I paid for my Mac+ system in 1986 (I may have to adjust for inflation).

I probably will come to my senses since a newer iMac i7 w/ TB and a TB JBOD rack will do what I need - as will a late model Mac Pro. Even my current system works now that I have Time Machine running on two 3T Time Capsules via Ethernet (my libraries are on an eSATA drive thanks to the OWC mod).

Still... "I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it..."
