Making Windows Independent

Post by gspin »

Sorry to all if this is 101, but I am trying to make the Tracks window independent from the Mixing Board, so that if I select a particular track in the Tracks window, when I then switch to the Mixing Board all tracks (that were previously selected) are still visible and not only the track I selected in the Tracks window.
I have searched and tried in Preferences but no cigar....

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

If I understand you correctly you can use the CHANNEL STRIP for this is Consolidare Windows. Open it and it will reflect the track selected.

Pop the mixer out of the consolidated window and work with it as an individual window. The track selector will be independent. Or, deselect all tracks in the tracks window before clicking the mixer tab in the consolidated window.

Pop the mixer out of the consolidated window
Many of us do this and buy an inexpensive 2nd monitor just to display the mixer. Best $125 I have spent on my setup.

Not wanting to crowd my workspace with a 2nd physical monitor, I keep a full-screen window containing the Mixing Board open at all times in the 2nd "space" of Spaces, Apple's virtual monitors which allow many monitors to be open at once, all instantly accessible with a key command or trackpad gesture.

I keep as many as 6 Spaces open during DP sessions, and have used as many as 9. Just another option for those who don't want more monitors. And… it's available right now to anyone who uses OSX since about Panther, I think.

Shooshie, Sorry for my naiveté, but spaces works with 2 monitors and full-screen? I'm intrigued with spaces and want to check you postings on it (weren't you going to do a video at some point?). But I thought it didn't work with 2 monitors.

Best,

Full screen in ML does work with two monitors and is very similar to using Spaces. I could never get my work done in time with one monitor and I'm actually considering a third. Producing for broadcast and film is extremely difficult with one monitor, if not impossible for me at this point. Also working on print scores would be tedious if there was a movie involved - which there almost always is.

I haven't tried the software linked below yet, but if anyone does or has used it, I'd love to hear how it works. Basically, it's creating window sets - just like DP, but maybe only in the Finder. Again, I haven't checked it out yet.

Browsing these again, it would appear they are Finder-centric. Oh well...

Thanks mlc. I have 2 monitors as well (the result of scoring a film a few years back so I totally get what you're saying.). Having just upgraded to ml and 8.0.3 I'm intrigued about using spaces, cw, and full screen to see if it improved my work flow. I've been curious about the comments you and shooshie have posted. It's just a lot of new stuff to absorb.

Best,

You don't really need Spaces in ML if you are using full screen compliant apps. Finale is not one, but if all the other app are, then essentially, using full screen is using Spaces - just more painlessly.

When I invoke an app with a Quickey shortcut, the entire screen moves to the new app, full screen, which is along the lines of what Spaces does. Spaces probably gives you more flexibility but full screen is plenty of flexibility for me at the moment.

The advantage of Spaces is that you can set up screens the way you want them and leave them that way. Yes, there's about 5 to 10 seconds of dragging icons in "Mission Control" when you first open a file, but it does remember their positions in each window, it just doesn't remember their "space." In one space I have, maybe, a half-dozen plugins open, arranged in the window so that I can see them all. In another, I have the Mixing Board fully expanded, plus a few metering plugins below it. The Consolidated Window goes in one space. Edit windows in other spaces. Virtual instruments in yet another.

You should try various things. You'll probably like one or another. I simply don't use a 2nd monitor, because I work in a limited workspace where everything already does double-duty. I've got other monitors, and I could plug in a 2nd one right now, but it would simply disrupt my workspace too much. With Apple's Spaces, I can have as many as I want, all in the same physical place. Just my preference.

Good points, Shooshie. Sometimes I feel like the guy running along side his bicycle, who when asked why he doesn't jump on says: I don't have time, I'm already late!

In the end I always seem to gravitate to your suggestions - some of which I fought tooth & nail against, only to find I was wrong, or more accurately, ignorant of the benefits contained therein.

Thanks for the reminder. Every so often the Launch Pad appears and I think: Gee, I should really check that out. The problem is being set in my work habits. I tend to shi(f)t slowly from the "old" ways but I really do need to hop on that Spaces bicycle or get off the bowl...

LOL! When it comes to mixing metaphors, you always like your shaken, not stirred. And that's a neat trick. So to speak.
