Drumcore and DP

Post by Babz »

Is anyone out there using Drumcore with Mountain Lion and/or DP 8?

Back when I had my old G5, I invested a lot of time importing all my loops into Drumcore 2 and was using it as my main loop browser in DP. Since then Drumcore was sold to Sonoma Wire Works and seems to have seen little development in recent years.

Now I'm setting up a new system from scratch w/ DP 8 and trying to go all 64 bit..

From checking the Sonoma Wireworks web site, it seems that Drumcore 3 is still 32-bit, however there is some mention of "mixed results" with J-Bridge, etc.

It also seems they have dropped ReWire support and works as a plugin. Not sure what all that is about.

I can upgrade from v2 to v3 for $50, but maybe it's time to cut my losses and start all over again with a new loop browser program (maybe something like Stylus RMX)?

I hate to lose all the time I invested in learning the interface and organizing all my loops, but I don't want to spend the money if it won't work with today's OS and DP.

Should I consider Drumcore all but officially orphaned at this point?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Babz

I had problems with Drumcore 3 crashing DP so went back to DC2/Rewire and all still good 7.24 and SL 10.6.8, but that doesn't answer your question.

Rewire/DC probably still works in ML but 32 bit.

Sonic Reality sells some DC artist Paks in Stylus format and they work well, I've also imported some DC loops with Sage Converter. Might be the way to go but put your librarian hat on....

Yes, Drumcore 3 works fine with DP 8 in 64-bit, at least as far as MIDI and audio outputs for the pads if you use jBridgeM. I'm still running 10.6.8, so I don't know about ML. Joao, the maker of jBridgeM sent me an update that fixed a bug with alternate outputs in Drumcore 3, so you would have to ask him about that, but it works otherwise.

But one thing that does not work in DP 8.01 when using 64-bit is dragging REX audio into DP. In fact, that it evidently doesn't work to drag ANY REX audio into DP 8 in 64-bit mode, maybe even from the finder, so that's not a DRumcore problem per se. You have to boot into 32-bit mode to drag in the loops. But it occurs to me that maybe fixed in DP 8.02. I will try that today later and report back.

No, unfortunately, you still can't drag Drumcore loops in 64-bit mode, only 32-bit mode, on Dp 8.02. I guess this isn't a DP issue per se, but since Sonoma Arts isn't likely to update Drumcore 3, regardless what they might say officially, I wish DP could figure out how to get this to work. Maybe I'll leave a trouble ticket for MOTU. Or maybe Magic Dave is listening?

FYI, if anyone is interested, I called MOTU and they said they are aware of this problem. They acknowledge that it isn't a DP issue per se, because REX files are, by definition, 32-bit files. However, they also saw they know other DAWs have found a way around this with wrappers, and they are looking into doing a similar thing. So maybe they will fix this by the next update.

Some great news. I just found out you can get DP 8.03 in 64-bit mode to import Drumcore loops! All you have to do is install the REX shared LIbrary 1.7 and it will work with 32-bit bit REX files in 64-bit DP. Just go here and download the installer for Logic 9.1.2:
