Macs now only 10% of Apple's revenue

Post by FutureLegends »

According to latest conference call.
Macs are down 16% which is blamed on supply constraints for the new iMac primarily.

Still, the development is rather worrying. But on the other hand, The iPhones (56%) and iPads (20%) need content to be valid products and as long as you can't create iPhone apps on an iPhone or an iPad I think the Macs will live on. And 10% $54.5 billion is still a fair amount of money ;)
It's quite apparent that the Post-PC era is upon us though ;)

I'm just happy has long as I don't have to work in Windows and in FCPX (which is seeing frequent updates, which is encouraging).

Yes, and stocks are down 15-20%.

Why? iOS is not as far ahead of the curve as it once was, and Android is really coming along.

We're entering a period in which the loss of Steve Jobs will be keenly felt. No one's been pegged as the next greatest thinker-- at least not yet.

All the rage is about smart phones these days. I'm as gung-ho about Dick Tracy tech as the next guy, but the loss of Steve Jobs sort of means a loss of thoughtful innovation "of a sort"... at least for a time.

Siri was once a nice thought, but she's inconsistent and still "not quite there". iPhone 5 is not the rage. Even the latest ads prove to be less than fascinating or seductive as they once were.

We're finally entering the non-Steve phase. I think they should pull Wozniak back in for a year just to bridge the gap. Business is about ideas that people can use.

Who wants an iPad that pales next to a Vizio tablet at four times the price?

AAPL will figure it out-- or at least I hope so.... and fairly soon.

It seems like the company is in transition. They fired Forstall (the iOS VP), rehired Bob Mansfield (the former mac hardware VP), and promoted Jon Ive (the top design guy) in the last few months. The newly designed iMac has a wait period of 4 to 5 weeks because of supply chain constraints, and the new iMac design possibly portends changes in nextgen displays and a new Mac Pro design. Summer will bring WWDC, and it has been three years since the last "big thing" announcement at WWDC, so it is quite possible we will see something significant in terms of new products this year. Of course it remains to be seen how all this will play out, but from my view is that it appears there is significant movement internally to rebalance things.

Here is what Apple says:
Cook said there were three main factors that contributed to the decline in Mac sales performance: constraint of iMac supply; the loss of one week from the last year's 14-week first quarter; and channel inventory constraints that were down by over 100,000 units at the start of the quarter.

Commenting further on the issue, Cook reiterated the impact of iMac production issues, noting that "if you look at our portables alone, they were in line with IDC's projections of growth." Cook also pointed to the 23 million iPads Apple moved in the quarter, saying "we've always said there was some cannibalization, and I'm sure there was some cannibalization of Macs there."

...my 2 Swiss cents... ( Rappen )

Steve was there at the right time at the right place,
like The Beatles, and others...

I may be wrong, but hardware developpements aren't making the same big steps as years ago..., some barriers are probably reached... for now ?

If software developpement can go on, fine, but this means to me an OS needs to support more generations that what Apple decided lately...

And it could be modular...

best
