GarageBand Query

Post by chamelion »

Hi all,

My daughter came to me with a GarageBand problem on her MacBook Pro, and I haven't a clue how to sort it out.
She's been using GarageBand for quite some time, with no problems. She's been using the regular GarageBand loops, as well as several Jam Packs, without any problems.

She hooked up with some guy who purported to be a Mac genius, and he suggested copying her Logic Pro loops from her other computer and adding them to the GarageBand loops folder on her MacBook Pro, thereby increasing the size of her GarageBand loop library.

The moment he dragged the Logic Pro loops into her GarageBand loops folder, some catastrophic event seems to have occurred, and now GarageBand on her MacBook Pro isn't seeing any loops at all - even though her GarageBand loops folder is full of loops with the .caf suffix.

I have no idea what the problem could be, much less going about fixing it. I can understand that maybe there might be some incompatibility issue of some kind going on with the Logic Pro loops and GarageBand, but for GarageBand not to see anything in the correct loops folder..... beats me.

Anyone have any ideas? Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Geoff

From Apple:

If your loops don’t appear in the loop browser:
Try any of the following:

Choose GarageBand > Preferences, click Loops, and deselect the “Filter for more relevant results” checkbox. When this option is selected, only loops in keys close to the project key appear in the loop browser.

Be sure to add new loops by dragging them to the loop browser. Do not copy or drag them directly to the Apple Loops library. When you drag loops over the loop browser, GarageBand adds them to the Apple Loops library and to the index.

Open the Track Info pane and choose Show All from the pop-up menu at the top of the Browse tab.

If you add loops other than Apple Loops, and they do not appear in the loop browser after being indexed, you may need to drag them from the Finder to the timeline to add them to a project. Loops dragged from the Finder do not appear in the loop browser.

Some of the info above might refer to an earlier version of GB, but...

In GB v6 there is a "Loops" sticky menu option at the top of the Loop Browser to "show all". Not sure if that option was inadvertently changed....

There is a Reset button among the loop categories. Try clicking that if it's not grayed out.

Because it may be difficult to distinguish between GB loops and Logic loops, you might need to reinstall GB before dragging the Logic loops into the Loop Browser just to get a clean start. This might necessitate clearing out all those loop folders.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Frodo, you are a Dood!

Thank you so much. Messing with GarageBand stuff, to me, is in the territory of 'There Be Dragons'!
I'm sure the answer will be in there somewhere.

Thanks mate,

Cheers,

Geoff

You are a good Dad. When my daughter has a problem with Logic or GB, I point out that a) she is married to an Apple engineer and b) there are plenty of support groups for L/GB.

Sometimes, I export the files, open them in DP and show her how fast I can get things done. The only reason I own Logic is to do that.
