SPDIF Overload on 828 MkIII

Post by Rev.F »

Hi,
I have an 828III and am using Windows XP.
I have an issue where the SPDIF output always overloads when I get anywhere near to full scale.

For example - If I limit a track to say -0.8db
The meters on the software and on the hardware I/O for eg- headphones register fine, but the SPDIF output on the CueMix FX show it is overloading, and indeed I can see and hear this on downstream equipment.
This may be a driver issue or a hardware fault.

I am pretty sure it is not operator error - but would love to be proved wrong on this! :o)

Has anyone seen this before and have a fix? - Should I go back to a very old driver? Currently using 4.0.5.3503 as the latest drivers don't seem to work with XP properly anymore.

Thanks!
Paul.

I don't have a PC or the MOTU unit but you might want to check the clocking is set correctly in both units.

Thanks for your reply.

On the MOTU Audio Console on the PC, timing is set to internal.
As far as I can see, the hardware reads the same. (As you would expect it to be controlled by the MOTU Audio Console.)

Are you suggesting that this should be any other value, or is there some other setting on the PC or hardware I am not aware of?

Thanks!

Are you sure that this isn't the result of more than one mix bus "doubling" or "ghosting" the S/PDIF output?

Suggestion: Mute all other mix buses completely across the board, and use just mix bus 1 for a test.

Good idea - But no mix busses are active...
Any other ideas people?
Can anyone replicate it (- or un-replicate it) using loud RMS and peak PC files outputted through SPDIF?
Thanks!

Loop back your S/PDIF and see what it looks like back inside the computer. You could record your S/PDIF input to look at it, but even CueMix should give you an idea if it's overloading.
