No Firewire video-out in DP8 and other video issues

Post by dix »

I'm wondering if others are experiencing: DP8 won't recognize .dv files. - .dv files are grayed and can't be selected. The manual still says the the format is recognized, but I'm not able to open them. The formats DP8 does recognize run choppy and with no video-scrubbing. Opening the same sequence in 7.24 the video plays easily. Fortunately, 7.24 can open 8.0 sequences without a Save As.

I can't comment dv-problem, but DP8's video engine is very power hungry. My 2010-mid i7 MBP couldn't play videos fine in DP8. Playback was choppy with same projects that run very smooth in DP 7.24. Certainly DP8's video playback is letdown. Although movies run smooth with faster computer.
For audio post production there's also a major bug in DP8. OMF doesn't work right. Volume curve data isn't transferred right. I have sent examples to Motu, but they haven't answer me yet.
So, DP 8 isn't full ready for working with picture.

Yes, its a bit of a let down especially since there wasn't really anything wrong with the old quicktime implementation. My computer isn't new, but it should be more than powerful enough to play average size movies with DP - the sequences I've been testing with don't even have VIs or audio in them!

Oh well, we knew this was going to be a bumpy ride to 64bit. Guess its back to (the awesome) 7.24 for awhile.

…PJ, I noticed you joined the forum exactly one day after I did back in '04. Weird!

I'm surprised there's not more people working to picture for me in this forum. Seems like there's just a few users talking about video.

I spent the day trying to iron the video issues described above, but I got nowhere. I did confirm that MOTU is also unable to use .dv files, so no Firewire output in 8 for the time being. I'm starting a project so troubleshooting the video slow-down issue may have to wait (it's completely unusable as-is). So its back to 7 for me for now. Fortunately all the new plugins work in 7 too! That's something I guess.

Well, again, many are using quicktime, not .dv The only reason to use dv is to output to and external monitor, no? Nevertheless, it's odd old .dv files work and newly exported ones don't. I exported from several programs to no avail but files from last year with the same apparent specs work fine. Really odd.

I'm over the .dv thing. I'm pretty sure MOTU will need to fix that with an update. However, I wouldn't mind being able to use Quicktime in DP8 NOT via FireWire. As it is, opening any QT dramatically bogs down my entire Mac and guarantees a crash. THAT behavior seems like it could be fixed by changing a setting or trashing a pref.

Funny. QT never gave me a problem. When I'm up and running we should compare graphics cards. I got my Mac used and I think it's an updated card
But even my G5 and G4 were always pretty QT friendly.

Just chiming in here. video play back IS terrible and stuttery and choppy.
Very sad that they tinkered with something that didn't need to be upgraded or messed with.
DP3-7 was flawless and playback. Now it's terrible. Almost to the point where scoring to picture is irritating. tempted to boot back up in Snow Leopard and use DP7.

I hope there's a fix to this soon.

Just curious.. Is the No Output to FireWire thing a bug? Or did they purposefully take that feature away?

I use a Canopus to output to my TV.. it's old school, but It has worked great for me ever since DP4..

I guess I could get a new video card with 3 outputs, and do a mini-DVI to HDMI out of it... but that would be an unnecessary expense..

Gracias!

A bug. The manual says .DVs are supported, and even the DP8 demo video states that you can output via Firewire, which you can't do without .DV.
