Multitrack audio from superior drummer - strange results

Post by crduval »

Some time ago I bought a cross grade from ezdrummer to superior drummer. I am now in the middle of the first full project with SD, and ran into some strange results.

With EZD and now with SD, I lay down a MIDI drum track and run the vi in stereo as I add other tracks. When I'm ready to mix, I final edit the drum MIDI, set up multiple stereo audio tracks, assign them to the Ez/SD multitrack outputs and then do a multi record pass to capture the individual vi outputs as separate audio channels.

No problem doing this with EZD, but with SD, I got lots of strange artifacts - drum hits shifting, piling up on each other, etc. I had to punch in over a dozen times to correct problems before the track was correct.

Just wondering if anyone ever experienced this, and what the cause might be. I did see that SD can do a bounce to create audio tracks, but I didn't try it, I didn't expect problems with my previous workflow. FYI, I'm running SD in real time, not pre-rendered.

Maybe it's a processor limitation, I think SD defaults to 24 bits bs 16 for EZ... anyway, thoughts appreciated.

Use SD's bounce feature: It's awesome, works great and it's the only way to get the full benefit of that gigantic multigigabyte sample pool you paid for. If you want to bounce with SD's internal effects, control bleed, etc. you can do all of that with it.

I have never had that problem with Superior Drummer - however it could be the size of your kit causing memory overload - it can be quite memory hungry if you are running other VI's as well. EZ Drummer is much less memory hungry - so it sounds as if that could be the problem. Try using a smaller kit or try it with 16 bit to see - the default kit it comes with is pretty big especially if run in 24 bit.

I think that's right. Using SD's bounce feature makes all those problems go away, plus you get to use the full depth of the layers and samples in the product. This is important to understand about SD: in real time use, you are limiting the number of velocity layers and simultaneous playback of samples; when using SD's bounce, all of those limits vanish and the tracks you import back into the session represent the VI working to its full potential.

Thanks for the replies - I'll try the SD bounce feature. I guess I didn't really understand the high RAM demand.

I actually use a combo of EZDrummer and Superior -- I'll record my MIDI tracks using EZDrummer, then, split the MIDI tracks up (snare, kick, hats, etc.) and bounce them one instrument at a time to audio, usually with the EZDrummer kit I like to use, then, with a Superior Drummer snare. Yes, weird, I know.

The thing about Superior Drummer as opposed to EZDrummer that you may not be aware of is, there's humanization on every individual piece of the kit. You literally have to select each piece and switch off the humanization. Not sure why they set it up that way, but it definitely took me a while to figure this out, which wound up with me having some bizarre drum tracks until I figured it out. Mind you, turning this off doesn't kill the pieces' other qualities, like using multiple samples or different articulations, it will just restore the timing as you intended.
