Why is my 4pre installation so unreliable?
Hello people,
If anyone can help...
I had lots of issues with this installation and finally my 4pre had been working flawlessly for a couple of weeks. Now and since a few days, for god knows what reason, it keeps crashing on me all the time!! Weither it's when I listen to some i.e. youtube stuff or trying to work with my DAW program, it's like someone keeps pulling the plug on me...very frustrating. I invested time and money to equip a studio in which the sound device is holding me back, what should I do?
Thanks for any help...
Dan

YouTube is powered by Adobe Flash and that stores LSOs ("super-cookies" if you will) that track you and destroy YouTube and other Flash stability.
You can use this website to clear these LSOs from your machine, system-wide:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/docum ... ger07.html
I recommend to use Firefox with the BetterPrivacy add-on that can delete the LSOs every time you close the browser or also on a timer.
---------
If you still have issues with other things, copy files out of C:\Windows\Minidump to any other folder then zip them. Upload to Rapidshare then paste a link here to it.
If you don't have that folder, instead, type msinfo32 in the start menu then press Enter. File | save on the opened screen. Zip or rar the saved file, upload, then paste a link here.

Re: Why is my 4pre installation so unreliable?
Thanks torrentg for that info, I was not aware of those things.
I generally use Chrome for it's faster or Firefox but Chrome most of the time.
I think I also pin pointed what could be part of, if not the problem itself for that instability. Recently, I found that when the drivers are "disconnecting", they would "come back" if I barely touch the Firewire cable that's connecting the 4pre...this is odd because it is something that never moves...it's like the connection is "fragile" (is it?)...and the wire is brand new...but I'm gonna change it anyways to see if it's resolving my issue.
Thanks and regards,
Dan

Re: Why is my 4pre installation so unreliable?
Yes, please be careful though.
Despite it's spec design and shape, it IS possible to insert one end of the wire upside down into a port on the computer or MOTU. When disconnecting and connecting new cable, be sure to see that it is the correct way. If not, when powered on, it would damage the MOTU permanently until fixed.

Re: Why is my 4pre installation so unreliable?
Don't worry, I know about cables and I connected it the right way, it's just that it's not rock solid like audio connectors for example...more on the loose side...
Re: Why is my 4pre installation so unreliable?
Yup, I hear ya on that. I too know very well. I mean I even know engineering specs and the whole nine yards. Even the crush tests and other tests that UL does on them. I was a project manager there for wire and cable.DanFuzz wrote:Don't worry, I know about cables and I connected it the right way, it's just that it's not rock solid like audio connectors for example...more on the loose side...
Why do I tell you this? Because I placed it in upside down and blew my Traveler firewire chip once - BUT - that was because I was very drunk and wanted to jam out...things weren't set up so I decided I needed to make it happen.
Obviously with my above story, it didn't turn out well lol!!!
Re: Why is my 4pre installation so unreliable?
Lol, that is a very good story though...indeed, anyone can make mistakes...
So I changed my 9 pin to 6 pin FW cable again and didn't have a "disconnection" problem ever since...and I had paid 30$ for that other cable...but now it works fine.
Morale is: Never assume a brand new cable is flawless...lol
