32 to 64bit on my server... is it this simple?

Post by 4leafplanet »

Hiza, i have more RAM in the mail on its way. My 1 year old MBP is running 32 bit (4GB of RAM inside)... Could going to 64 to accommodate the new 8GB of RAM affect my 32bit plugs, ect.in any negative way? Anything to watch out for?

Also i'm planning on using the 6-4 keys at boot-up. is this the best? Is there a safe way to automate it? so i dont have to think about it all the time?

thanks much,
4LP

You do not have to be in 64 bit mode to use the additional RAM - the 4gig limitation is on applications, not the OS. So regardless of 64 or 32 bit mode 32 bit apps with plugs will only have a max of 4 gig while the OS is able to address the entire space with multiple applications even in 32 bit. Not saying you shouldn't switch to 64 bit, just it may not be what you're thinking. Also if you're switching to 64 bit, you'll have to run some apps in 32 bit mode (selectable in Get Info)for compatibility issues, i.e. if you're Rewiring anything with Reason 6 and a 32 bit app). The current version of DP will run 32 bit regardless, but DP 8 and 64 bit are on the horizon.

I loaded up all my VI's in DP 7 at once. It was really pleasing. They all worked. Kontakt 2 brought down the house. I figured it would and I have K5 so it was just a fishing trip. I also downloaded the 64bit Plogue. It labored much more than I thought it would. The same VI's in DP as Virtual Ins were unnoticeable.

So I checked My Apps and some have the 32 bit box and some don't. For the ones that don't are they just 64bit in the 64 bit world?

For the ones that don't have the checkbox, I believe they're just 32 bit. You can check it in the Activity Monitor.
