Melodyne: Possible to remove just one BGV on a mono track ?

Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Melodyne: Possible to remove just one BGV on a mono track ?

Post by buzzsmith »

I don't own (yet) Melodyne DNA, but I downloaded the manual, and it kinda indicates that this might be possible... :?:

I have a new session and on 3 of the tracks I recorded a (mono-then stacked) 2 male, one female background vocal group. The blend was just fine and I didn't hear anything "bad".

However, the artist/client, I think, now has some issues with perhaps the girl singer's performance. (I haven't called him back yet...and he was here yesterday during the tracking session.)

So, before I might need to rehire a group to come back and redo these three, is is possible to actually remove the girl singer from a mono track with Melodyne DNA? I know from what I've read that it's just wondrous, but is it THIS wondrous! :)

Hope this is not too sophomoric...I did try to research this prior to posting.

Thanks!

Theoretically it's possible. How good a job it does is another question. If you like, you could send me a few seconds of the performance and I'll try it out and send you back the results. You could then decide for yourself if it's satisfactory before you lay your money down for DNA.

Thanks, Phil.

Just for future reference and knowledge, I may send you 10 seconds or so.

Turns out that the artist/client/producer was pretty OK with the the blend and performance, he just felt that these very studio-wise pros overrode him on a creative decision that he now regrets he let happen. If he'd tapped me on the knee or something, I would have insisted that they follow what he wanted. I'm writing the checks!

No BGVs on a line or two, 'cause part of the group didn't feel it "necessary" and it was a little hard to match his laid back phrasing. Just another day in the studio...

PM me your email, please, and over the weekend I'll send you small Mono BWAVE file.

Will do.

As far as the studio is concerned, been there done that. Sometimes it's difficult to know what's going on in another person's head in the heat of a session. As you say, a tap on the knee can be the difference between a happy or not so happy client. Good luck.
