mds causing CPU to run at 100%

Post by Rainman »

I'm sure I'd seen a few posts in the past mentioning this problem. I had this for the second time last week and the first time I solved it by doing a re-install of everything on my Macbook Pro, not the best solution. This time I searched a considerable number of Mac sites and tried quite a few solutions, from using disk utility, Onyx and some weird voodoo utilizing the Unix core. What worked for me however was simply logging out of my administrator account and then logging back in, worked like a charm. Hope this helps for anyone experiencing this. My problem started when I dl'd a bunch of new apps and plugs/updates at the same time so trying to figure out what was causing it would have made for some serious trial and error.

And you realize that mds is what Spotlight uses to index your drives? So it would make sense that it is working overtime to catalog all that stuff. One thing you could do is go to the Spotlight Control Panel (System Preferences) and in the privacy tab, add your plugin location (HD>AUDIO>PLUGINS). Then Spotlight won't care about all the new stuff.

Search Apple Discussions for mds and you'll find out a ton about it.

Yeah, I've been all through that stuff, went to Spotlight preferences and did all of the things recommended, however after a few weeks of Spotlight continuously causing my CPU's to run at 100% you start to realize that whatever caused the problem wasn't being solved by that fix. Trust me, I've been to the Apple Discussions countless times on this and prior to throwing in the towel I tried something that seemed almost too simple. I just posted this for people who might have been at the same stage as I was as one more solution that worked for me, that's all, if it helps, great. No harm done. I did my homework.

I had disabled Spotlight a while ago after similar issues but not so severe as yours. I then went back, turned it on again, and added many items to the privacy tab. I hardly see Spotlight doing anything now. My Time Machine backup may have been very attractive to Spotlight. I now have exempted it and put the TM disk on an external FW buss. Just an additional FYI for tose reading this. Thanks for posting your solution!
