Ordered the 6 Core 3,33 GHz

Post by Radiogal »

Wanna share the fun with you guys. :D

I finally did it!! After 6 years using and abusing my dear sweet old PPC G5, I finally placed my order!
A brand new Intel Mac Pro 6 Core 3,33 GHz with 16 GB RAM, Snow Leopard, a superfast Velociraptor 600 GB HD (audio) and 2 extra 1,5 TB Seagate Barracudas. using all 4 HD bays.

I got the brand new PCIe 424 ready to take all the MOTU interfaces!

Good thing is; The G5 will be fully intact, cuz I´m change the whole system.. PCIx 424 to PCIe 424, UAD1 to UAD2. So these older PCI cards won´t be moved from the G5.
This way I can start up the 6 Core without any specific downtime in the studio. Yeay!

One more thing.. I also can put all the PPC Mac 8 GB Ram AND the PCIx 424 into my PC/windows.
DANG! Didn´t think about that until now!!
Allthough I´m probably gonna have the G5 intact as it´s a stable system.

Excited? Yep! I really wanted a Snow Leopard machine with FW as Thunderbolt is coming and FW will probably be abandoned.
OSX Lion is gonna be released soon and this will make DAWs and plugins unstable for a while.

I´m ready for the next DP update :)
Expected delivery at May 12..

OMG! They just offered me the Western Digital Caviar SATA 6GB/S 64MB cache 7200rpm 1,5TB instead of the Seagate Barracuda 32 MB cache 1.5 TB for the same price, as the Seagate wasn´t available anymore..
The WD are 3 times more expensive as the Seagates!! :)
My lucky day!

The only downside: You won't have that G5 acting as a room furnace to keep you warm on cold nights.

Seriously - your new system consumes much less energy and puts out far less heat.

Congratulations!

Congrats RG! Still in the G5 world, I'm jealous.

One thought: You may want to consider picking up a small SATA II SSD (Sandforce recommended - like OWC offers) to use as a boot/scratch drive. This would be the coup de grace on what is sure to be a rockin' system!

Woo Hoo! :D

Radio Gal!!
You are going to love the upgrade.
I have recently made the G5 exodus ,still putting the new system together, too many installs, authorizations etc....
So far even upgrading to a used 2008 Quadcore MacPro seems like a great leap forward.
The MacPro is much faster, very quiet compared to my G5 ,better architecture etc......

RG,
in reference to your comment about Thunderbolt,
imo Thunderbolt looks very impressive potentially but it will be a while before it is in all Macs and successfully implemented.
That is one reason I went used now,I want to see how the Next generation MPros develop w/ Thunderbolt , accessories, prices etc..... and can wait (hopefully)2 cycles before I do another upgrade,I try to resist anything 1st generation.
TBolt or not this will be a giant leap forward for you. :woohoo:

RG, congrats! We have a lot in common here! I went from a Dual 2 GHZ G5 to a 3.33GHz 6-core. 12 GB of RAM, 600 WD Velociraptor for VI's, WD 1 TB Black Caviar for Projects, WD 2 TB Green drive for Time Machine, new 27" display. And I had to but the MOTU PCI card for the third time! A lot of $$$ but what a smooth system. A lot less heat and much quieter. It purrs. I have yet to hear the fans rev up on this thing! If you have any questions, please contact me as I have just been there.

Good luck and enjoy. You will not have any regrets at all, I promise!

Thanks Hammerman, I will :)
I really can´t wait any longer. My G5 is puking on me almost every day now.. :vomit: as I´m demandig way tooooo much from it.

Gonna be a blast to get more power under the hood, hearing the music as soon as I hit "play" :) No more extra time needed to rewind the tape ;)

The 6 core is only 2 days away.. It will take some days to install everything and get it up and running.

Yeah, I've been going back and re-tracking a lot of stuff, because I'm noticing lack of organic phrasing due to poor latency on my old G4!

Hopefully, since you do this for a living, you won't be tempted to do the same. :-)

Ordered the 6 Core 3,33 GHz

You'll definitely notice the performance improvement. I went from a G5 Quad with it's industrial fans to a new 8 core MP. It's very quiet, super fast, and laughs at whatever I throw at it during a DP session. Since version 7.22 is so stable, this is a great time to be DP user. Enjoy the moment!
