effects sends - pre or post?

Post by n2mpujack »

Does it really matter whether effects sends are pre or post fader? Post fader would make it easier to manage levels of the signal for both the dry and effects buss with one control versus having to muck about with two level controls (and I'm not talking about the effects send level). Or do I have the concept wrong? Part of the problem is in all the years I've done computer recording I never really worked with effects sends, particularly in Sonar which essentially treats sends and busses as the same thing so I would just create a buss, route the output of whatever tracks I wanted an effect on and then route that to my master buss.

Plenty of references I find talk about the send part of effects sends (and I get all that) but not about what to do with the levels afterwards when mixing.

I'm trying, after all this time, to get a bit more elegant in my workflow.

In my mixes the faders are always on the move, sometimes with quite radical level riding, so it makes sense for the sends to be post in order that the effects stay relative to the source.

Unless, for instance, you want a sound to emerge from or recede into reverb.... then pre would be needed.
